Pacquiao sits at the top of the food chain. We’ve seen he clearly beats fighters at that level
Pacquiao is a fantastic 40 year old fighter. But he is no longer elite P4P. Spence, Porter, and especially Crawford all are. If Pacquiao fights any of them, he will lose.
...against Khan where it almost backfired as Khan was schooling Canelo for much of the fight, only to be caught with what some have deemed a lucky punch from the much heavier man.
I don’t see how luck had anything to do with it. Canelo faked a low jab, Khan dropped his hands, and Canelo followed with an overhand right. Fight over.
I believe God is good all the time too. But that doesn’t mean God is going to allow you to get punched in the head forever. Pacquiao has already had a much longer career than 999 out of 1000 boxers.
Why not? As someone on this site pointed out, everyone has a right to take a beating if that is their desire. If I could make millions fighting grown men for little risk, is probably go for it.
Jacobs, Canelo twice, chenko..
Why is that??????
This is an excellent point, thank you for posting. Even after his fight with dchenko, I am still not certain that he is suffering age-related decline so much as he is just fighting really top level competition. He spent years defending his title against decent, but not great, fighters. Canelo, Jacobs are two of the best in be world. Dchenko just has a tenacious style.
I don’t know, maybe someone who knows more can tell us whether GGG is objectively slower now than 5 years ago. He has never moved his head, never been especially defensive-minded.
I noticed people were making fun of Tank for calling out Pacquiao but I think it would be a great matchup. Two guys who are pretty similar in size and if it happened at 140 I would favor Davis. Unlike Broner, Davis will be aggressive and let his hands go forcing Pac into a young man's fight which he won't be able to handle at his age. In boxing we know that power is mainly born and not made and Tank definitely has that natural power that will carry over multiple weight classes.
I don’t know who would win, but your analysis is reasonable. Tank looked real, real good last weekend. He’s a counterpuncher who doesn’t depend on it; he’ll go in tight and land punches, then go back outside and give his opponent the shoulder. A balanced fighter.
Of course Pacquiao is better than anyone Tank has faced. But Pacquiao fights one way - relentlessly offensive. Tank will know what to expect.
What an impressive victory for Kovalev. It appears he really was overtrained in his previous fights. It happens to committed athletes, and I bet it happens in boxing quite a bit.
No interest. If Mayweather wins it proves nothing, he is already known as the best fighter of this era. If Pacquiao wins it proves nothing, for he has beaten a 42 year old who hasn’t had a real fight or a real training camp since September 2015. In other words the fight is meaningless from a historical perspective.
I would argue he wasn’t robbed in ward/Kovalev 1. Kovalev May have won but it was very close. It was controversial and close fight, but it was not a robbery.
The second fight showed that Ward was just a little better.
Fernandez, sensing that jetlag was finally settling in, gave Manny the afternoon off to rest.
Im sure this was the right move, but it should be Freddie’s decision. Noticed that Freddie isn’t the only person who speaks in the corner either. Must be very frustrating.
why would it be freddie's decision? roach is not the head trainer here.
I’d say Freddie should be the head trainer, and if he isn’t that it speaks to the general dysfunction of Pacquiao’s camp. I can’t imagine that anyone knows boxing better than Roach in that camp.
This was an exciting fight! Greer made a significant adjustment midway through. He stopped circling the ring and getting caught on the ropes, and started standing his ground and fighting inside. It worked!
Dogboe’s corner should have protected him and thrown in the towel. He took far too much unnecessary damage in the 11th and 12th round, when he had no chance of winning. His corner did not take care of him.
The fight only proved that Spence is not a great fighter. He struggled against a B-fighter.
I don’t know. People keep saying that but Porter keeps giving people hard fights and usually winning.
“Pacquiao has given the public very real reasons to dislike him personally, stemming from his dangerous political actions, including outright ****phobia...”
It’s possible that many people, perhaps even most, do not regard Pacquiao’s views as ****phobic, or just don’t care about his social/political views.
I for one am pleased that there is some part of American culture that remains free from political obsessions.
You obviously have no idea what you're looking at then. Fury is levels above Ortiz in literally every department.
Tyson Fury hits nowhere near as hard as Ortiz. Fury has superb footwork however.
Ortiz is a really great fighter. Maybe too good - Wilder is the only top heavyweight with the courage to fight him! And Wilder won that fight by thre skin of his teeth. I suspect Anthony Joshua took one look and said “no thanks.”
He has plenty enough pop to keep his opponents honest but the issue will be taking a heavyweight punch like Wilder's when natural heavies can't.
Not only regular heavyweights, but people who outweighs him by 40 pounds can’t take the punch either! Even in the 12th round when most heavyweights are running on fumes!
I think it would be madness for Ward to attempt this. Canelo mysteriously has more knockout power at 175 pounds than at 154. He is not normal, maybe not even legal, and Ward should stay retired. He is a great broadcaster, nothing wrong with staying there.
I don’t know if GGG is slower or not, but his performance against high level fighters like Canelo, Jacobs, and Brook are probably not the best judge. Canelo and Jacobs are top level, A list fighters. He beat Jacobs and fought Canelo to a standstill twice. Those opponents were far better than the previous 20+ title defenses that he rolled through.
Hopefully I can find this show, as I don’t have Showtimes. I’ve heard it said that Liston was the finest heavyweight of his era, and lost to Ali only because both fights were fixed. I suppose we’ll never know for sure.
So many reasons why a rematch is needed and this is one of them
I can’t think of a single good reason why this fight should take place. What in the world would approve? Floyd has already proven he’s the best fighter of this generation. If he beats Pacquiao, he proves nothing. It’s Pacquiao wins, he proves that he beat a 42-year-old Floyd Mayweather. In other words, the fight has no appeal to anyone who is not a hard-core Manny Pacquiao fan. And that just isn’t enough for me to get interested.
Mikey is my favorite fighter but this sentiment that he is a winner regardless is total b.s. and disrespectful to Mikey. Mikey signed the contract like a grown man and he will cash that check like a grown man, he better come to fight like a grown man too! I hope he wins but if he loses then Spence deserves all the credit.
Well said! We shouldn’t prepare PR for Mikey losing already. Let’s wait for the fight. Hey
