Sergey Kovalev made his reputation as the 'Krusher', but on Saturday in a rematch with Eleider Alvarez, the Russian champ regained his light heavyweight title by using his boxing smarts. Click Here To Read More]
Good to see Kovalev turn his career around. He should see how important this was/is, and stick with the plan. And NO MORE switching trainers.
As for unification fights, I see him beating Bivol. Don't know how well it would go though with Beterbiev and Gvozdyk. Might be too much of a tall order, but I think at least he'd be competitive in either.
Respect to Kovalev!!
Never though i would see the day when the Krusher would put on a boxing clinic while Alvarez was doing his best impersonation of Broner.... not letting his hands go!!
What an impressive victory for Kovalev. It appears he really was overtrained in his previous fights. It happens to committed athletes, and I bet it happens in boxing quite a bit.
This BS of fights not being made because promoters are feuding or the fighters are with rival broadcasters is screwing up boxing. There doesn't seem to be much will out there to change this. It's always bugged me. Two fighters that want to fight shouldn't have to jump through hoops. Yeah I'm naive and that's not how boxing works etc. .etc.. but some changes need to happen.
You're right, its a bunch of BS.
This is where the alphabet groups can actually be useful by mandating certain fights regardless of politics.
They do that occasionally but mostly seem to be in the pockets of the promoters and find ways to bend the rules to do their bidding.
The other 175 lb champions are Beterbiev, Gvozdyk, and Bivol.
Bivol is with Eddie Hearn so you can probably forget about Kovalev fighting him.
But Beterbiev and Gvozdyk are with Top Rank. Who Kathy Duva is in essence a sham promoter for. So those fights should be easy to make.

Didn’t watch the fight last night. It started way too late and I still haven’t bought in to the ESPN+ and DAZN nonsense. Guess it’s a sign of getting old and being stuck in my ways.
Anyway, sounds like Kovalev boxed his way to a convincing victory. Not surprising. Kovalev is an excellent technical fighter. He outboxed Hopkins. And IMO he outboxed Ward in both of their fights. Ward just outfought him and exposed Kovalev as a mental midget. Either way, Kovalev and Alvarez have beaten each other once. My question is, does Alvarez deserve a rubber match?
After seeing the fight, I actually buy that he was over trained. Kovalev looked sharp and didn't show fatigue after the 5th rd, I remember hearing that Buddy said Kovalev is different than most fighters in that he gets sharp quick and didn't need long grueling camps. Pretty crazy, but it's going to be nice seeing him try and unify, time is definitely not on his side at 35 yrs old.
he should try and get the only belt he's not gotten, the wbc or he could sign with dazn make money against one or two scrubs and unify with bivol to cap it all off

If you check Kovalev is with Top Rank as is Gvozdyk.
Bivol is with Ryabinsky's 'World of boxing', and Beterbiev as of 2018 is with PBC, so it's a bit of a soup.
The only two I see fighting each other in the next year is Bivol and Kovalev. Bivol stays busy and is fighting Smith Jr on 9th March.
Beterbiev will most likely fight bums for the foreseeable future and hold the IBF belt for ransom unless he truly wants to challenge himself.
I can't see Gvozdyk risking his belt for a while.
Bivol v Kovalev late this year might happen, but that depends on Buddy McGirts advice to Kova.
One thing preventing certain belt holders sitting on them are the prospects and contenders coming through.

Bivol did not actually sign with Eddie as exclusive. Bivol is still with World of Box... but for western media he is represented by DAZN/Eddie.
World of Box also does events with Main Events/ Duva... who is representing Kovalev still.
No huge issues getting that fight. Heck, this would even be a great fight to hold in Russia.
I think Beterbiev and Bivol would be better suited for Kovalev. I think Gvozdyk (Marcus Browne too) is too much for him, now that Kovalev is no longer "The Krusher!" I think Kovalev should fight Zurdo Ramirez! That would give him a nice payday, and it's a winnable fight too!
The Russians own the light heavyweight division I see, and it appears Arum owns the Russians at that weight. As a Jew myself, the irony of that is entirely palpable

Bivol signed with Hearn & DAZN. Co-promotion with World Of Boxing. Bivol also said he's moving down to 168 after the Smith fight.
Beterbiev isn't with PBC anymore. Haymon released him & Beterbiev signed with Top Rank.

I really hate these faux fight fans that use the term bum. You're an ass
