timofei is already out of his prime (32 soon) and he has only 1 good win (mendoza, should have been unification) with a few ok ones. when will he do all that to become the greatest? classic st up id hyping. i like him in the ring but his resume won't be great.
nooo. guevara is down and it appears he doesn't intend to continue.
2nd round no decision. guevara initiated a headbutt and couldn't continue. very unfortunate. especially after takami's fight was canceled. this went from solid card to main event only.
they declared it a technical draw.
it's a deserved victory for santiago. santiago - canizales next would be great but they aren't money fighters. purse for one of them would probably be lower than traveling expenses and accommodation. usa's attack on venezuela destroyed canizales' career right when it finally took off. meanwhile, undeserving boxers in higher weights earn big purses.
Not a fan of just giving titles but yes Hernandez should be nr.1 to fight whoever for the vacant belts.
the problem is yoenli is wba's mandatory and that makes him ineligible for other belts because of reasons. lara - yoenli mandatory fight would actually be for the lineal title (with adames moving up and alimkhanully's suspension) but two cuban non stars are tough to sell. that fight should have happened last year and it's still not on the horizon.
why not curiel? because cissokho. wbc had random title fights at welterweight for 3 years starting with barrios' undeserved shot at #1 ugas for their interim belt. it's enough. or i have a better idea. every mandatory, #1 and swerved boxer should sue them and destroy them. one cancer less.
IBF now need to follow up with demanding that a mandatory defence is undertaken within the next 3 months
jai fought his mandatory 3 months ago. he has more time for voluntaries.
I don't think so he dumped the belt previously to pursue a more lucrative opportunity on a Saudi backed card. This isn't much different as Zuffa is clearly paying more than his old contract with Matchroom.
At the end of the day boxing is about money and making the most money due to the danger of the sport and the long term implications of the dangers.
that's not exactly what happened. ibf mandatory was injured and wouldn't be ready to fight before february. jai had zorro in december AND he had no issue with a mandatory fight in february. not one or the other fight but both. ibf wanted him to skip zorro and only fight briedis (one instead of two fights, it's clear who was wrong there). ibf then jumped the gun and stripped him. but then jai - briedis was promptly scheduled for february on usyk - fury which was postponed for may because of fury's cut. ibf looked silly.
rolando romero - 2 division champion. the worst ever. 3 undeserved title shots in 3 divisions based on 1 robbery (marinez) and 2 unexplainable gifts. this guy is treated better than de la hoya and ray leonard based on nothing.
The BEST fighting the BEST!!
it is the best vs. the best signed with the same promoter, as almost always. none of these incompetent promoters can pull off what we all want. the closest and the best thing in the last ~100 years (since tex rickard's heavyweight tournament after tunney retired) was wbss 1 at cruiserweight.
these random fights, negotiations, a-side b-side, "i want more money" nonsense guarantee we will never get the best vs. the best in every division regularly.
the easiest solution are 8 men tournaments: 1/4 finals champions vs. 4 mandatories, 1/2 finals unifications, final undisputed. money for victory is set in advance for every round. no more money for someone's popularity. until then, we'll never be satisfied with this ru bb ish of a sport (organization wise).
turki wasted so much money on a couple of heavyweight fights and canelo. with that same amount he could have staged 15 tournaments (every division except super middleweight and heavyweight) and literally save boxing. too bad he didn't follow boxing at all after mike tyson and knows nothing about it.
Obviously I'm not saying this is how it's going to be looking anytime soon, I'm saying it's ultimately what they're aiming for and I support that. If the sanctioning bodies can eventually be phased out and over the next few generations the majority of significant boxers brought under one umbrella, this is eventually akin to what things could look like and I don't see how that's not a drastically marked improvement over the current boxing landscape.
The matchmaking in UFC at its worst is far more rational, rankings-oriented and merit-based than what we have in boxing.
8/9 divisions only existed in the same day weigh in era. that's the key.
zuffa or whoever could in theory make sanctioning bodies irrelevant with bigger purses, lower fees (sanction, promoter, management), higher activity (number of fights per year), bigger exposure and meritocracy. they are NOT doing that. "come fight for us, we offer EVERYTHING better". it would be a no brainer.
You're looking for a confrontation where it isn't necessary. Me choosing to comment on articles doesn't change the fact I'm in a minority and that this is understood by people who run websites with high engagement. Many writers, wisely, choose not to read BTL (below the line) comments because it impacts their writing too much when the people commenting represent a tiny part of total audience.
Many of the mega threads here were brimming with imbecility and vulgar language which one had to wade through to read anything worthwhile. The owners presumably don't want that rubbish accompanying their articles on the front page and who can blame them? The edgelords had a good run and ruined it for themselves with their excesses and immaturity.
i agree completely. i like it more when there's less activity. there was a time when i lost 2-3 hours daily on 3 forums because of the bolded part. it was ridiculous.
Are we still counting the WBC Franchise belt or did Sulaiman abandon that?
there were only 3 franchise champions: canelo, lomachenko and estrada. the last one disappeared when estrada - gonzalez was for the regular wbc belt.
i don't have a problem with interim belts. it's more about who fights for them and how long it takes for interim and full champion to fight or interim to be upgraded. if regular champion is expected to move up, vacate or be stripped soon, i welcome interim belts. if 2/3 champions of the same body will just exist simultaneously for a couple of years, i wish that body to die.
zuffa is not the solution. turki is just wasting money. but he's such a casual. forum members know more than him. that's why he needs somebody else to run things and all these promoters are just lying to him about how good their projects are.
Arturo Gatti
Jack Johnson
Adrien Broner (as a warning to all young boxers)
Oscar De La Hoya
Sonny Liston
i watched this one https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1131747/ about liston.
from a literal nobody, not even a name, to world champion - matthew saad mohammad.
george foreman defeated 4 champions. jack johnson defeated 5 champions (3 grossly undersized and 1 after 6 year retirement). people still consider them all time greats. it's subjective. without explaining one's criteria, opinion is irrelevant.
these are my criteria. divisional atg is top15 ever in that division. atg p4p is top 135 p4p ever. why 135? 1 for every year of the gloved era. in 1910 there were not 100 atgs. ditto in 1930. and if we don't want to remove already recognized atgs from that recognition, we need more places as the years go by. anybody who didn't research boxing history from 1890s until now, shouldn't even bother to name/list atgs.
there are no money fights at lightweight. shakur wouldn't come back. this is better than stripping/vacating after 6-12 months of inactivity. obviously don't pay 100 000 for nothing and continue with your life. there's no reason to hate.
damn what happened with the Noel unification? off topic, does anyone know if the reach listed on the ring website is accurate? according to them Bivol and Callum Smith have the same reach as Mayweather and Morrell has 2 inches less than Mayweather. I know Mayweather had a very long reach in comparison to his height but that is quite extrem to thing his reach is the same as Callum Smith
breadman once said that mayweather's and vladimir's arms are the same length. back width is something else.
good job. there's no reason to waste time when he won't defend it. now order herrera - zepeda this month. wba should order bahdi - schofield as soon as possible and lightweight will be alive again.
Both of them are pathetic duckers. Sheeraz ducked Mbilli and Pacheco ducked Sheeraz.
sheeraz was offered 3 title fights simultaneously (mbilli, pacheco and iglesias). maybe he would have declined mbilli if he was the only option but that wasn't the case. pacheco is to blame here. if he knew he needs more time to acclimate to his new team, he should have declined this title fight immediately. everybody just wasted time.
