Ok so I was watching quite a few fights this morning trying to study Cotto's main "flaws" and I noticed what he mainly did wrong in the Margarito (and others) fight and I just wanna say I hope he learned from these slight mistakes that could make a big difference against Jennings and other future opponents!:
Back on the ropes:Cotto seems to like to lure his opponents and make them feel like they backed him up on the ropes when in reality he does it to himself and exposes their confidence and tees off from the ropes..but when you have a constant pressure fighter who swings from all angles and throws a variety such as hooks to the body and inside uppercuts he can get himself trapped and in trouble..he's too quick and smart to let himself do that anymore!..
Drop hands while backing up:Cotto cockiness has always been evident..once he knows he hurt his opponent but chooses to not finish them up he'll take a breather and start back pedaling but he drops his gaurd all the way down..I'm surprised Mosley didn't throw a lunging hook and drop Cotto while he did this!..but he needs to keep that gaurd up..cuz again people like Margarito caught that and took advantage and HURT Cotto!..
Circle opponent:This goes back to my first point, Cotto mostly backs straight up to the ropes than either stays there or tries to whip his opponene around and try to corner them and swing away..NO!..Cotto's speed and footwork is underrated and he should keep it in the center more often by circling the man in front of him and if the guy can keep up from time to time going toe to toe than he'll have to resort to my next point..
Clinch in the inside when necessary:CLINCH!..Cotto seems to have too much pride to do this unless he's on the verge of falling..and even than sometimes he chooses to trade instead..NO!..Cotto is big boned and solid!..he can bully his way wit alot of these guys and he can grapple them from time to time to frustrate them and tire them out than he can go back to work on the body and break them down systematically!.
Work on Stamina/Don't waste Punches:Cotto seems to carry alot of his opponents longer than he really should! and he either keeps backing up in to the ropes and slipping punches while he's there than keeps pedaling back or he'll throw Combo's of 5-7 punches at a time while the opponent is obviously blocking most of the impact of those punches..Cotto is one of the most ACCURATE and PRECISE punchers I've ever seen and he needs to use that to his advantage and tee off when it's necessary and not just waste punches so he can make it comfortably to the Championship rounds and win those decisively!..
With This said..WaRCoTTo!!!!!!!...
And if you guys have any other points I might have missed or not noticed to add on to this..Feel Free!..It's all personal opinion anyway!..Let's hear it!
agree strongly with points 1,3, and 4. i'd add he needs to learn to avoid uppercuts.
there as some funny ass titles in this. not sure if these'll be copycats but i'll give it a try..

What does Mayweather have to do with any of this?
cotto and mayweather are the two biggest stars at welterweight, and he was contrasting their styles..
I was thinking the same thing. Mayweathers hate is getting rediculous. Cotto fights a bum yet Mayweather is the guy being criticised.
gomez is not a bum, yet this fight for cotto comes after fights with judah & mosley, and will likely end up with cotto knocking out the winner of margarito-cintron.
as for mayweather's soft touches, gomez would ko the sharmba mitchell floyd fought, outbox baldomir. hell, he'd probably even beat hatton..
Sure he doesnt
Sure he wont
Sure he will
cotto hasn't feared fighter's power who have much better power than floyd. please don't reply with things that happened at 140lbs. which cotto dehydrated himself to make
was floyd able to avoid castillo or hatton's pressure? neither of them are in cotto's league either.
i agree that he will..
either way, this fight won't happen..
Pathetic comeback, seems like “retard” was well deserved...
1) Oscar is AT LEAST a welterweight, if not bigger, everyone on earth knows this, so i friendly suggest you cut the crap before looking (more) ridiculous
2) Shane one of the best at welterweight? I hate to break it to you, but this is 2008, not 2001.
what was your opinion on the worthiness of hatton as a mayweather opponent?
When it happened the 1st time, very high. Hatton had a lot of things in his style which gave him a great chance. He made PBF fight as I predicted, but againts PBF many of his nice assets (coming with angles, lateral movement, a varied array of punches) were nowhere to be seen.
As it is now, after PBF outhattoned Ricky on the inside, there is not much of a point. Cotto is a much more interesting fight in terms of outcome, but the Hatton rematch is still going to be very eventful for a PBF fight.
I only asked b/c you seemed to think that mosley wasn't a top welterweight, yet mosley dominated a guy that hatton was lucky leave the ring with a W against. If you want to discredit cotto's victory over mosley, then it's hard to justify floyd even stepping in the ring with hatton, imo..
