Ok so I was watching quite a few fights this morning trying to study Cotto's main "flaws" and I noticed what he mainly did wrong in the Margarito (and others) fight and I just wanna say I hope he learned from these slight mistakes that could make a big difference against Jennings and other future opponents!:
Back on the ropes:Cotto seems to like to lure his opponents and make them feel like they backed him up on the ropes when in reality he does it to himself and exposes their confidence and tees off from the ropes..but when you have a constant pressure fighter who swings from all angles and throws a variety such as hooks to the body and inside uppercuts he can get himself trapped and in trouble..he's too quick and smart to let himself do that anymore!..
Drop hands while backing up:Cotto cockiness has always been evident..once he knows he hurt his opponent but chooses to not finish them up he'll take a breather and start back pedaling but he drops his gaurd all the way down..I'm surprised Mosley didn't throw a lunging hook and drop Cotto while he did this!..but he needs to keep that gaurd up..cuz again people like Margarito caught that and took advantage and HURT Cotto!..
Circle opponent:This goes back to my first point, Cotto mostly backs straight up to the ropes than either stays there or tries to whip his opponene around and try to corner them and swing away..NO!..Cotto's speed and footwork is underrated and he should keep it in the center more often by circling the man in front of him and if the guy can keep up from time to time going toe to toe than he'll have to resort to my next point..
Clinch in the inside when necessary:CLINCH!..Cotto seems to have too much pride to do this unless he's on the verge of falling..and even than sometimes he chooses to trade instead..NO!..Cotto is big boned and solid!..he can bully his way wit alot of these guys and he can grapple them from time to time to frustrate them and tire them out than he can go back to work on the body and break them down systematically!.
Work on Stamina/Don't waste Punches:Cotto seems to carry alot of his opponents longer than he really should! and he either keeps backing up in to the ropes and slipping punches while he's there than keeps pedaling back or he'll throw Combo's of 5-7 punches at a time while the opponent is obviously blocking most of the impact of those punches..Cotto is one of the most ACCURATE and PRECISE punchers I've ever seen and he needs to use that to his advantage and tee off when it's necessary and not just waste punches so he can make it comfortably to the Championship rounds and win those decisively!..
With This said..WaRCoTTo!!!!!!!...
And if you guys have any other points I might have missed or not noticed to add on to this..Feel Free!..It's all personal opinion anyway!..Let's hear it!
Marg didn't cheat. Cotto has no chin, that's why he lost.
Did you see the fight? Assuming that Margarito didn't cheat, it was the body shots that took their toll. It was his stamina that was zapped, nothing to do with the chin, ol' Plaster Boy wasn't even able to KD him.

You can believe that all you want mate... there is no proof he used them against Cotto, just assumptions... but it is very hard to believe that he attempted to use them against Mosley and not Cotto.

I take it you're British?
Than he speaks on Cotto's chin...yet Calzaghe has been dropped how many times?..like 4 or 5?..lmao!
agree strongly with points 1,3, and 4. i'd add he needs to learn to avoid uppercuts.
Good point!..
Bert Sugar said it best in his prediction on the Margarito-Cotto fight.
Cotto tucks his chin in and puts the gloves up like earmuffs..making himself very vulnerable for the uppercut!..I've never seen Cotto wit any other form of defense so that habit might be HARD to break..but I agree he needs to avoid those uppers!..

Good post.
I believe him staying on the ropes hurts him alot. Also his style of body punching he leaves himself to uppercuts often . His stamina IMO is fine, just in the Marg fight he had a busted nose and blood continuing to come didn't help. Circling is a good idea, and maybe he should clinch but Miguel has always said that really isn't his style, but hopefully his fights are fought better.
