Great fight that was, Joe hit alot harder back then aswell. To the guy that said Benn would have had him well i doubt that, Calzaghe would have stood up to his power and out boxed him.
I'd largely agree with you if you weren't ignorant of the talents of Calzaghe, Winstone, Colin Jones (one of my all-time favourite fighters) and the tragic Johnny Owen.
Robbie Regan FFS. Who was that drawf he kept on fighting? Ampofo? Good scrapper I concede, but WTF?! And did he really win a world title? WBF or something I would guess. Anyway, world class he weren't and borderline British class. Same goes for Gavin Rees and Steve Robinson for most of his career. Barry Jones didn't win a world title although he did get rather demolished by Freitas when he tried.
Still, in fairness, they've punched above their weight, and in Wilde and Calzaghe have two of the ATG's. Wilde you could easily put in the top 5 P4P of all time.
I agree Calzaghe, Winstone, Jones and Owen are/were all class acts. That juliocesachavez guy is a clown.
What about Freddie Welsh who was lightweight champion from 1914 to 1917 and avoided like the the plague by world champions for years before that? or Jim Driscoll who beat the shit out of the featherweight world champion abe attell in a non title fight but never got chance to actually fight him for the title. both of these guys are legends and are top 100 p4p of all time (according to Bert Sugar). we certainly have punched way above our weight and in the early 20th century we had 3 of the best boxers in the world in wilde, welsh and driscoll. Ive got some documentaries on all of these guys which i'll try and an upload in to the trading block when I get time.
Hate is a powerful word more like dislike
I hate how Calzaghe fans hype his wins like they are something special.
They call Lacy mini Tyson.
They think Kessler beats everyone from 160 to 175.
They ignore the fact that Eubank was past his prime and entered a 2 week weight draining regime because he was meant to fight at 175 and took fight at short notice.
They think Hopkins does not have a case he won the fight
Im welsh and and a big calzaghe fan but I know how annoying some of his fans can be but you get the same with mayweather and pac fans.
Lacy was thought to be the next big thing at the time although its been proved since that he's pretty average. At the time that was a big win.
Only time will tell how good the kessler win was as he hasnt fought anybody of any note since.
Eubank was still a quality operator FACT !
It was a close fight with hopkins and when I watched it live I thought Hopkins may have nicked it but when I watched it again I scored it to joe by a couple. Definetly a close fight!
i hate calzaghe even more, seriously beating roy jones at this stage of his career..what does it proove? an old man in b hop deserved to beat calslappy, calslappy also beat lacy an ovverated bodybuilder, and kessler a fringe world class one dimensional fighter, also dont forget..he beat two "CONTENDERS"...1 couldnt even win contender. now that is not the resume of a legend, his 46-0 is padded as ****, and what pissed me off even more was the lack of respect calzaghe showed roy jones, who EVERYONE KNOWS is past his best by a few years, roy jones was cut, and bloody and thats the respect you show a TRUE hall of famer by taunting him?, it sickens me. why doesnt calzaghe really be a man and fight dawson, or rematch b hop, i even fancy a blown up twinky eating winky wright to whoop on calzaghe, all calzaghe does is rely on workrate to SLAP his way to victory, i show that bum no love. and btw, im from the uk, so all you fellow uk people i aint a yank hating on a british fighter.
im sorry but that is one of the worst posts ive ever seen. The last time Joe lost was in the amateurs and always finds a way to beat the man in front of him and he would same to chad dawson to what he has done to every other fighter. He has beat eubank, reid, woodhall, brewer, mitchell, lacy, kessler, hopkins and jones so thats 9 world champions in 46 fights so there is nothing wrong with that resume. why the hell would he want to fight hopkins again? he has already beaten hopkins on his home soil. absolutly ridiculous post from somebody that was 7 years of age when joe first won the world title.
I dont know why people are knocking Macca after that show he put on against Braithwaite. It Haye drops his hands like Mormeck he'll get K'oed. Mormeck was shit that night and almost won. It will be over quick I bet, cant pick a winner though.
