Saad, Gatti and Carmen Basilio are the most exciting fighters ever. Saad had amazing fights with Rickie Kates, two with Marvin Johnson and 2 with Yaqui Lopez. He knocked down Eddie Gregory (Mustafa Muhammad) within the first minute of their fight but lost a decision. it was early in their careers. sir Jose has it right with his life story too. Saad is a very nice man who offered some training tips to a guy making a movie in 1975. You may remember the guy, Sly Stallone? he got the running up the steps idea from Matthew. A book and movie are in the works for Saad's life, although they are going slowly. He was just with Stallone on Tuesday in Philadelphia as Rocky 6 was being filmed. I spent time with Marv Johnson, Yaqui Lopez, Eddie Mustafa and Saad last year, WOW!! what a time with all 4 of them together. I can't get the picture in here so go to announcerlarry.freeservers.com and look at the Photo page. If you get the chance to see ANY of his fights, I strongly suggest you watch and save them because he was the greatest mix of punching power/chin/desire and heart there has ever been.
contender announcer
is the Contender ring announcer just absolutely painful to watch AND listen to during the introductions?
I can't belive they brought back that screaming banchee back for another season.
hotties
Yeah, Manfredo's wife is incredible.
Mrs. Acelino Frietas is gorgeous.
Terry Norris's wife looks much better in person than in that photo.
Amir or Ahmed (the flashy middle eastern guy) from Contender #1 has a real hottie too.
only the 3rd Zale Graziano fight was filmed. Tyring not to duplicate what you have on here already:
Look for round 13 Marciano vs. Walcott.
Saad Muhammad vs. Marvin Johnson; 8th round 2nd fight. The 7th round would qualify too.
Matt Franklin vs. Yaqui Lopez 1st fight- round 8. 2nd fight was also Round 8.
any fights you can get from Kevin Pompey and from Julian Letterlough will be plentiful for action rounds.
see if you can pull down round 1 from Plebani vs. Morales. rightnow is it on 15Rounds.com, look for the banner from the Blue Horizon and you can see the fight, don't know if you can download or buy it though.
gatti vs. Luiz Melendez round 1 from the Blue Horizon- Gatti's 6th or 7th pro fight was a hint on things to come from him. it was on USA Tuesday Night Fights.
as was Frankie Mitchell vs. Bryant Payden in '91 or '92. 7th round was amazing as was most of the fight.
Gatti vs. Robinson 1 - final round (10 I think).
gatti all action good skills
Gatti has better skills than he's given credit for because he turns to his instincts quickly. He'll be known as the most exciting fighter in history, just ahead of Saad Muhammad, because of his many wars. But if you really break down his fights, he uses skill, but when he gets rattled he turns to instinct and the fights become wars. Because he's nearing the end of his career I am hoping we have someone who is at least half as exciting. Right now Rogers Mtagwa out of Philadelphia is one with skills who will trades exchanges. Gatti is easily a B grade; could have been an A- but he did lose to Oscar, Floyd, Ivan Robinson (the first was better than the M. Ward bouts) and Manfredy.
contender announcer
...is among the worst. Believe me (I know it's hard) but I've heard worse. But he is a joke, no doubt about that. Amy Hayes was worse and guy named Nino occasionally gets to make a fool of himself in NJ.
why this contender announcer acts the way he does is beyond me. He screams for no reason, is going to blow out the system because he is screaming into the mic, which is jammed to his lips. I can't believe they brought the fool back after last season's horrible performance and his losing his voice at the live finale because of his cartoon histronics.
Archie Moore
I met Archie Moore in 97 or '98. His speech was not slurred at all and his mind and eyes were sharp. I didn't talk to him long and he didn't seem to want to be involved in a coversation. so I got an autograph, had a line or two of general conversation and thanked him and left him alone. There was no stagger to his gait either, he was still steady. :)
vegas gyms
check out the Boxing gyms link section on BoxingInLasVegas.com. I've been to the Top Rank gym on Business Lane off of Industrial St (or Ave.). It is near Harmon St. and the What's On building. Be careful if you take a cab, make sure they know the intersection of Business Lane and Industrial...or tell them to take you to the What's On building on Industrial, near Harmon Street. you can walk from there it's 2 doors down across the street. boxinginlasvegas.com might even give you the address for that gym.
B.A.D. was just bad
Those announcers did not mesh well. Fran does not have an announcer voice and seemingly has no boxing knowledge or TV exerience. If you notice how many time he stumbled over names or statements, I got to the point I felt sorry for him.
Max and Fran were not prepared and were obviously reading the whole opening segment.
HBO may not have had time to prepare these guys but they have a looooonnnng way to go to be average.
sparring
I have sparred with Richard Stewart, who you may see soon. some east coast USA people likely have seen him on TV regional cable. He's 8-1 now. I've not sparred but worked the focus pads with Clarence "Sonny Bono" Taylor who was on ESPN2 2 in early May 2006. he didn't do anything I taught him in that fight, which he lost a narrow decision. considering I was past 40 yrs of age, I know Stewart took it easy on me. He's coming down from heavyweight to cruiser so I was happy to give him some work and help him lose a few pounds (that Dairy Queen Blizzard) on a slow day at the gym.
See you guys in the ring on June 2 at the Blue Horizon, June 3 in Trenton, NJ Sovereign Center as the ring announcer.
ouch
At least he shows that a bad announcer can wreck a show. It must have been a sponorship issue with a hotel in Cancun. He was wearing one of the hotel shirts. Lupe is awesome, Joe Martinez is very good. The guy from Florida who has done some ESPN announcing lately is very capable; wish I could remember his name. The Philadelphia guy, Larry Tornambe, sounds excellent and has some TV, he was on ESPN from Delaware in Feb.
they are trying to get presentations to all the champs throughout the year. alhtough unconfirmed, on the 10th they are trying to get jacui Frazier, Matthew Saad Muhammad and possibly Imamu Mayfield. If you're there start a "BoxingScene" chant when Larry gets in the ring to announce. let us hear you in Philly!!
Deez, did you go to these fights? Did anyone attend? Always remember to save your money by skipping a DEE LEE card. Read my first post on this subject and realize the fight lasted 1:18 and Santiago got creamed. I don't believe he's hurt, despite being TKO'd. By hurt I mean permanently. thankfully I've not heard anything like that.
Santiago vs. Taylor?? Santiago is a career 140 pounder and has been off for at least a year. Taylor is a hard punching middleweight. This Dee Lee Promotions is going to get somebody hurt!, let's hope they have an attentive referee who can prevent a disaster.
most likely Stallone be in the Observer category, which is for journalists, publishers and so on. Budd Schulberg is in the Hall as an "observer' and he wrote "The Harder They Fall" and "On the Waterfront".
spellcheck
nard is a smart guy but his comments about the UFC are wrong.... if it really took no skill than he could get in their and whip them all, but he cant
I think you mean "in there".... nearly all of the UFC guys couldn't hit a boxer clean, but if they can tackle them and lay on top of them and pound the prone fighter ( which is what I see when I watch UFC and similar ) then tackling is really the only skill.
6 or 10
Is it 6 punches, as in the title, or 10 as he has in the text? Where is the -editing and self-proof reading?
Let's not forget Wilfred Benitez vs. Maurice Hope.
and Duran vs. Moore for the lower end of the list.
