Yeah, Arce's hair would have me making comments. There was a kid at the local Chinese Buffet who looked like he had a mushroom on his head. I couldn't help but laugh.
Mayweather by 12UD.
Gatti stands a chance for a KO/TKO if he closes the gap and turns it into a brawl. I could envision it against the ropes, Mayweather using his crab defense, and catching a straight right from Gatti. However, more than likely, "Pretty Boy" Floyd will dance around the ring, and using his speed, agility, and superb countering abilities and cat-like reflexes, will stand victorious after 12 entertaining rounds of boxing action.
I don't see Gatti getting KOed in this fight for some reason. Perhaps its more believable to see McGirt throwing in the towel, since he does tend to actually care about his fighters, unlike some trainers.
I could see him doing it to save the embarrassment, and the continuous onslaught that Mayweather may bring into the fight. However, I'm just betting it'll be a UD after 12 rounds.
Whoever said Pacquiao, I second the notion. A little Filipino, who'd be scared of him? That is until, he hits you with a mean flurry and ends it with a devastating right hand.
I'd also add Wayne McCullough to the list, and Erik Morales, and Jesus Chavez Jr.
As I said in another thread, I'm disappointed by the lack of respect that Mayweather is displaying for the classy and experienced warrior in Arturo Gatti.
Thanks for sharing the article. Though I'm still rooting for Mayweather, I'm hoping Gatti will at least make him respect him more.
I dunno, I guess one could argue that Pac-man was robbed, but IMHO the decision was just. It cannot be denied that he put up a fantastic fight, though. That could easily be the fight of the year.
There is no way you can judge if Mesi was over-rated yet. He's an up and comer, and there are reasons why he never fought any top ten rated fighters. I can't say that I agree with the rankings, because he didn't defeat anyone credible to be ranked the #1 WBC contender before his incident occurred.
You guys are also forgetting that Mesi was the victim of a nasty rabbit punch. Intentional or not (I doubt it was intentional) it ruined everything, and is considered to be the very cause of his brain hemotoma. The amount of granite in your chin doesn't mean jack shit when you take a rabbit punch. After that, his equilibrium was thrown off, and that accounts for the numerous follow-up knockdowns.
He was a bit lackadaiscal against Monte Barrett in the later rounds, but conditioning is the main reason for that. He was performing impressively prior, and that is undeniable. Barrett is a credible heavyweight who put away the rising "star" in Guinn.
Mesi has explosive power, he has one-punch knockout potential, and against the likes of the heavyweight division today he had a serious chance. Every up and comer has some growth to do, and he admitted that following every single fight in the interview.
As far as his injury is concerned, he has a review coming up with the Nevada State Athletic Commission in April. That hearing will officially decide whether Mesi is fit or not to step back into the ring. So, you can't say his career is over for good or not, yet.
DLT, if your opinion had "nothing to do" with this fight, then why did you wait until after he fought Joval to create your thread saying how shot Vargas was? You can't judge by how he performed over a year ago, because he's a different fighter now. Give him some damn time.
Anyway, onto the topic at hand. Vargas looked like he had some new tricks to work on, and I think that if he continues to sharpen his defensive skills with his new trainer, he can be an elusive killer. He still has the power, so imagine the counter-punching possibilities. We'll just have to wait and see a few more fights before we can start making any decisions.
Oh please, man. Some people jump in with logical posts about how Trinidad is known to do whatever it takes to win, and show the evidence that he repeatedly threw low-blows in that fight, and you're going to start whining about haters.
Listen, maybe it wasn't the most tactful decision on Lampley's part to bring up the intentional low-blows, but they definitely were. Watch the fight again man, you can see how intentional they were.
Fernando Vargas said himself that he was looking to try something new. Perhaps the best decision wasn't to turn a pro-fight into a sparring session, but he didn't do half-bad.
I'll say this again -- Give him a few fights before you jump the gun and claim the man is shot. You can't even say that this bout is a reflection of the negative results incurred during his bout against Trinidad, because he has taken an entire year off. He's a different fighter, wait and see. That's not to say that he is going to be a legendary competitor, it just means to wait before you go throwing assumptions out and making an ass out of yourself.
I'd like to see Pac-man come back strong, but only time will tell. I think if he learns a little bit more self-control he could be even more of a force to be reckoned with. The haters do offer one stable argument -- Pacman is quite a bit one-sided. Perhaps that's what he'll train to improve.
I'm looking forward to seeing him take on the three top featherweights, though.
Fernando Vargas is a different fighter now. As it has been said time and time again in this thread, no body should expect an athlete who has been out of the ring for over a year to come in and look as sharp as he did prior.
It was pretty clear and obvious that he did not perform with the same intensity that we are used to seeing from him, but then again he fought totally different as a whole. Defensively, he put on a boxing clinic, and although Joval is no where near the level of Trinidad, Wright, DLH, etc., to make anyone in the top 15 middleweights land at less than 20% accuracy is impressive.
He performed well, but in a different way than he usually would, because his approach was totally different. He wasn't going for a knockout, and that much was evident after the first three rounds. Be patient and give him a few fights before you go jumping the gun and claiming the man is totally shot.
