The same reason why Tim Bradley got hated on after winning a robbery against Pacquiao.
Garcia lost to Herrera and got a gift decision in his hometown. Garcia is basically a paper champion at this point.
The difference is that Bradley went on to face JMM and Garcia is facing the 77th ranked guy from a division below.
Don't forget how much pressure he had on him tonight. He signed a fight with Hopkins on the same day he's fighting. No matter how mentally tough you are, that's going to affect you in some way.
It was a great performance regardless. beautiful body shot took Caparello out of the fight.
People in this thread don't seem to realize that if he actually did enter this "contest," he would probably not even win, and would have wasted many hours of his professional time designing something for absolutely nothing. Meanwhile, he has rent to pay, other clients to attend to, and actual paying work to be done.
This type of contest isn't anything new. We were learning about how to avoid it back when I was in art school, and that was just under ten years ago. It's usually reserved for overtly-illegitimate businesses who would then turn around and have someone in-house go through all the submissions, steal ideas from the good ones and design something themselves based on those ideas. It's a very old practice and it's a no-brainer (at least to anyone with a little common sense) that you wouldn't even give that email the time of day. He just happened to respond to it, tweeted about it, and got some attention.
Dan did the smart thing and actually got more press from his tweet than he ever would have from losing some "contest" for a boxing event poster.
The real question here is - why is Showtime, of all people, not working with a stable of designers already?
Because Showtime is expected to lose money in this fight.
And you're right, this is the stuff they try to pull on desperate students to get free work out of them. Dan's been in the business for a long time now and Showtime could have just commissioned him for a piece, but they treated him like he was desperate.
His response is a bit unprofessional. I would have just told Showtime to pay me for a painting, but what Showtime did was also unprofessional. They wanted free work and Dan being an artist has no doubt experience a lot of people/companies asking for free work. He's skin is thinner for this BS because he's tired of it.
If I was an artist and that's how much Showtime valued my work, I too would have told them to f*ck off.
This is Hopkins' retirement fight and he will retire after the fight.
On paper, it may seem competitive, but Kovalev could blow him out in less than 3 rounds.
Floyd should be a bit more grateful to uncle Bob.
Bob paid off James Prince and got Floyd off the hook, in what could have been a messy (and violent) situation for Floyd.
What were the rhydration weights?
I heard they both declined to step on the unofficial scale tonight. Looks like we may never know. Canelo looks like he's at least close to 170 or more.
7-5 Cotto. Canelo just didn't land much in round 12...a lot of air.
This fight could be a draw or knowing the judges' favoritism for Canelo, it's going to go Canelo's way.
Caparello does have some skills. He's a tricky southpaw and has a few slick defensive moves. One of his flaws is his right hand...he keeps it low at all times. That's begging for a Kovalev left hook.
I give him a few rounds before he starts to feel the pain. Kovalev by 5th round TKO.
Ward won't be able to clinch Kovalev that easily. He's not Froch or Kessler, who is slow on their feet. Kovalev has great distance control and he can move well on his feel. Hopkins is good at clinching his opponents after each punch, but he couldn't get close to Kovalev for 95% of the fight.
Ward will need to win his fight from the outside, where Kovalev is the most dangerous.
Please enlighten us how the PPV being on HBO will generate significantly more sales than being on Showtime. I thought this PPV sells the same on a Tuesday afternoon?
HBO has a further international reach. They have a bigger brand. They have bigger fighters to put on the undercard.
And finally, they've been unbundled from Cable for a number of countries and that number will only go up. In cause you haven't heard, you won't need cable to view HBO or HBO events in the upcoming year.
I don't care what anyone says.
Which network this fight appears on is a HUGE roadblock. Floyd wants it on Showtime, and Arum wants it on HBO. Floyd is extremely wrong on this issue and he's an childish fool to want it on Showtime.
HBO has a much bigger subscription base and the fight will make more money if it's on HBO. Everyone with a brain knows that this fight should be on HBO given the ratings comparison between the 2 cards.
Wow. Both Golovkin and Kovalev's numbers are down. To think they were being billed as HBO's new hype PPV machine. Guess they jumped the gun on that one huh?
And Stevenson couldn't draw 600k against Fonfara. Kovalev drew 80% better than Stevenson did, so I say they've made a good investment.
When Stevenson left for Showtime, he thought he was going to make more money.
He's right...for 1 fight. He got nearly double for Fonfara, but he hasn't done **** since. He had 4 fights on HBO in 2013. He's going to a total of 2 fights in 2014. After the ratings disaster for Fonfara, he's getting paid **** for his next fight.
Skills pays the bills and Kovalev is getting a lot more money in 2014 than Stevenson. Funny how the tables have turned and it was all because of Stevenson being a coward.
