had the fight happened? I really dont see it . what I think if the punisher was still around today he would've fought GGG already with no hesitation, probably would've retired the next day tho from GGG beatdown.
and if he canelo won , pwill would be the best fighter he would've fought right now not named Floyd.
Paul Williams was the test that I wanted to see Canelo take.
Don't know why ppl are making Williams with a bad chin because of the Martinez KO
If you watched the Ishida fight you would know. Paul looked iffy everytime Ishida landed anything significant. It was weird seeing him that way. His punch resistance took a dive after the Martinez KO.
Another thing people seem to forget was that the Punisher usually did give up height. But he was an amazing inside fighter for his size, better than Canelo. The outside and inside belonged to the Punisher. Canelo would have to work from mid-range.
Williams had leaky defense and was easy to counter, Canelo would have destroyed him
Williams had some physical atributes that could trouble Canelo (the height, the reach, the volume punching) but he never learnt how to use them.
It's baffling that nobody ever taught this guy how to fight tall and throw a proper jab
I'm probably the biggest Williams fan there is, but i think he would have lost a controversial decision. Although i would have truly believed that he would have been robbed of the decision. Williams didnt have the power to hurt canelo with one punch and even though Williams was taller and had a longer reach he hardly ever used those attributes to his advantage.
This is such a tough fight to call. Williams for 99% of his career had an iron chin, so I don't think it's fair to judge him off of that Martinez shot. A punch by the way Canelo just does not throw. That was all Martinez's movement and awkward stance.
Canelo has shown the ability to counter effectively against guys like Kirkland and a smaller Cotto. That's not the same though. I'd lean Canelo by decision, only because it's pretty easy to hit Williams and Canelo is at his best when his opponent walks him down.
I think Alvarez was too green to win that fight. Maybe I'm giving that version of the Punisher too much credit, but he would have overwhelmed Alvarez, I think. Much like Trout almost did, but that was later and Alvarez had improved compared to when he would have fought Paul.
The Punisher had problems with southpaws. (Which he himself was). Canelo is a decent fighter now. But the Punisher would have beaten him fairly easy then. The high workrate, stamina and length would have been too much for Canelo. To many angles, too many flurries and too much stamina. It's good to see you back Bushbaby. You have been gone a while.
I think Canelo would KO him. Williams was easy to hit clean. If Canelo can hit a guy right on the button a few times with his best punches he will win by KO unless that fighter has an iron jaw like GGG. Canelo hits harder than Martinez in my opinion. If it goes the distance Canelo still wins. Canelo edged out Lara. Lara easily and clearly beat Williams and got badly robbed. Williams was an unusual boxer because of his height and reach and his high punch volume. He is often overrated in my opinion because of these assets.
God Bless Paul Williams but I think Canelo would've knocked Paul Williams out! Paul Williams was a come forward fighter high work rate fighter who did not use much head movement. Canelo is a damn good counter puncher so I think Canelo would've picked him apart and eventually stopped him

I really do think that even that version of Williams would have tested Canelo even as late as 2014 when he fought Angulo. And when I see that he is still fighting 147 pounders I think he'd be competitive against a 2016 Canelo.
Angulo said he had to lose a bunch of weight, he was drained, depressed, and just a mess of a man at the time. Look at the ring walks to that fight, it was over before the bell rang. And even with Angulo being a zombie for a couple of rounds, he still somehow managed to get Canelo to suck wind and linger by the ropes in the 8-9th rounds. Even a diminished Williams would have been more lively than Angulo on that night I believe.
Too bad Canelo doesn't have this fight on his resume-i think we'd know him a lot more as as fighter had it happened.

Not at the time the fight was supposed to happen. Noway. Williams was too tall, too busy and his hands were too quick. Plus he could take a punch, Sergio not withstanding.
Well I still disagree, I think some folks are exaggerating about him being shot.
James Kirkland had just come off a good win and destroyed the young upstart Glen Tapia, who was undefeated at the time in a hell of a fight. If Kirkland was shot as some say, Tapia should of got that W easy.
Shot in terms of where he was, and where he is now....
Tapia is nothing special, and kirkland could still beat guys like him, but anyone that is legitimately ranked top 10 would beat the hell out of kirkland..
Canelo
j-rock
Charo brothers
andrade
etc
The biggest fight that kirkland could win right now is a rematch with angulo. Other than that, i don't see him beating any top level guys
Kirkland is shot to shiiiit....
The dude has no chin anymore, never had the technical skills, and much like angulo, is now nothing more than a punching bag..
Yeah the reckless style of kirkland will always allow him to land some shots, but for the most part, its only a matter of time before he gets iced..
I would give him ZERO chance vs any legit 154/160 contender..
Now if it was 2008/09 version of kirkland or angulo, it would be much better fights vs canelo.. But now those dudes are just too war torn to be competitive at the highest level
