IDK if the majority of Mexicans feel that way. But when Cotto was babysitting the MW belt I was hoping he got beat. I am a Cotto fan but using a belt for leverage and having these organizations bend the rules for you just makes the sport look bad.
1) GGG has perhaps the most fan friendly-style in boxing
2) GGG has fought 3 times in the past 1.5 years in LA area - Canelo has only fought once or twice in the LA area, the last time almost 5 years ago.
3) GGG lives and trains in LA and has made a concerted effort to appeal to Mexican fans ("mexican-style", etc., etc.).
4) GGG's trainer is of Mexican descent.
So not hard at all to see why some Mexicans would root for GGG over Canelo LOL...
Good points.
Dan seems to have told himself a story where Mexican boxing fans are reduced to a single subject position determined by geographical boundaries so he's surprised that they're capable of thinking beyond the logic of nationalism.
The thing is for me, even though they're known to get behind their fellow countrymen (not too unlike us Brits) if we were to pick one set of boxing fans whose identity privileges culture over country it would surely be the Mexicans?
After all, as you rightly point out, there's a style of fighting that Mexicans are renowned for championing. The 'Mexican-style' is held in awe throughout the sport, it's synonymous with machismo. With the way he fights, it should be no suprise to find Mexicans giving GGG props.

I'm assuming Mexican fans are as ardent as British supporters for British fighters. We bring great support for our guys.
Well, apart from Khan. Although against Canelo we're hoping he'll be the boxing God hand of karma.
The irony is big dunn is the same guy who used to accuse others of being filipino if they defend pac over floyd, he gave me neg rep before saying i was a biased filipino, and its funny because i criticize pretty much every fighter, i even defended floyd over the gold digger girl and got blasted hard in my neg reps by floyd haters telling me i was a floymo
stop lying. I sigged your "black power *****" garbage and you got banned. Ever since you've been pissed off and doing crap like this. I called you a biased Manny fan, not a Filipino, for that garbage "ALgieiri is a tough style matchup" before the Manny fight.
but isnt that how it works on here? if you're a fan of manny then your automatically a pinoy. i'll be a billionaire by now if i was given a quarter everytime i get accuse of being a pinoy on here just because i root for the pacster.

How many Kazakh fans you think would root for Canelo to beat GGG?
You are one desperate retard though.
How many Kazakh-American boxing fans are there? :lol1:
I've seen a number of Mexican fans wearing TMT shirts and hats at various press conferences at the Staples Center over the last few years. Maybe that would impress Dan as well. He probably thinks they should all be wearing sombreros and tassel rugs.
The vast majority of Mexican boxing fans would be viewed as "casual" compared to people on here. Most don't hate him because of who he fights, they're still pissed he blew it big time against "el pinche negro correlon" not to mention he's seen as a pretty boy like DLH.
Mexicans saying it is a big thing .mexicans will root for the mexican 99% of the time. My family loves pacquiao we would root for him until he faced a mexican fighter at which point he became the enemy. In my circle and people in and around it people are waiting for canelo to get his ass beat by ggg something ive never seen in my life time . Golovkin transcends the nationality barrier imo
I was at the fight in LA. Even I noticed a lot of the Mexicans there (and there was a lot) were GGG fans.
Of course, that doesn't mean Mexicans in general will support him over Canelo. Hell no, they won't. The ones in Mexico will cheer on GGG for the vast majority, easily.
Well. Mexicans/Chicanos are the biggest boxing fan group in the sport, there's gonna be a lot of us rooting for different fighters of different nationalities/races. Hell, me and most of my boys are Mayweather hardcore fans and we were all split 50-50 at a Maywether-Canelo fight party. Even my uncle who doesn't speak English bet big on Mayweather and was saying Canelo is a joke lol.

Canelo just became a star because Mexico was in bad need for a fighter to follow. Chavez Jr is a lazy fraud who smokes weed every day and even that bum had a huge following until he totally screwed over his own career.
Canelo is a weird looking ginger so he got put on that throne as a teenager already and spoon-fed a career. Does he have any great wins? Does he really have any dominating victories over solid opponents that he didnt outweigh by a ton? I scored the Lara fight a draw or even 7:5 for Lara so that is definetely not a decisive win. Cotto looked tiny compared to Canelo and Cotto is ooooooold and frail.
Against Floyd he tried to box and just failed miserably.
It is pretty clear that alot of Mexicans will support GGG.
Fat Dan is making shyt up. They were probably Salvadorans or people from Nicaragua. Those people hate Mexicans 'cause Mexican ese's make them pay taxes in L.A.
No real Mexican would root for an Asian.
Pac was very well liked, of course Mex fans rooted for their legends. Canelos no legend, looks like he may be a bit of a fraud. GGG is more Mexican style anyway. Like Marg said, Canelo let down Mexico with his meek effort vs Floyd, but he's not Mexican style, more of a "boxer"
Just because someone is ______ doesn't mean all _______ will support him.
Some Black Americans didn't like Floyd and rooted against him.
But it's safe to say that the vast majority of Mexicans/Mexican-Americans will root for Canelo when he fights.
GGG's fanbase is small compared to Canelo's, no matter what HBO/ESPN say.
Canelo/GBP will see this as huge success. Some Americans and African Americans alike hated Floyd and wanted him to lose, and rooted for his rivals, even if they were foreign. Mayweather is the richest boxer in history. The top 3 live gate records are owned by Floyd fights, 4th is by Lennox-Holyfield, then Floyd gets 5th and 6th with the two Maidana fights. The top 3 PPV records are also Floyd fights.
Canelo is doing something right if he's being hated by his own people.
I'm not sure that's how it works in Mexico. It's a more traditional boxing culture

Where were those fans for the GGG vs Lemiuex PPV? Lol fake ass fickle fans, hype beasts. Maybe they were part of the 97k squad, you never know.
How come Canelo is out here selling 350k on PPV with no names like Lara and Angulo?
Canelo's fanbase is legit. GGG's got a fanbase but not a fanbase who's going to actually support his PPV's vs no names like Canelo's fanbase.
