I was very dissapointed in him.. Several times early on he had ward backed into a corner and was laying in compinations but he would just back off even though Ward made no comeback. Was he afraid of Ward?
Kessler is done. Credit to Ward, I think he's a very tricky fighter and before the fight > I knew he'd give Kessler problems < (hence me not being able to pick a winner), but Kessler is not what he was two years ago.
Why?
Do we even need to discuss it?
Three rubbish opponents in two years mixed in with a ton of legal crap because he tried to get out of his contract with Palle because ... all he was getting was three rubbish opponents in two years. How can any fighter progress and stay sharp? This is enough to f*ck with any fighters head.
Kessler would probably have lost anyway, but that badly? I doubt it. He was flat as a pancake, because he is done. I don't see him getting back to how he used to be. What makes it worse is the damage he took in that fight. Those cuts could open up again, especially when fighting filthy, rabbit-punching Froch and his MMA tactics.

He hadn't prepared for a southpaw, he underestimated Ward's speed, and he was cut over each eye from headbutts.
In short, he wasn't able to adapt, so he froze.
It will be interesting to see Kessler vs. Froch, it will show if Kessler has declined or if Ward is as great as he looked. It's a bad situation for Froch, anything less then a KO of Kessler will make him look bad after how Ward handled Kessler. If Kessler on the other hand beats Froch it will show that he still is to be reckoned with even if he clearly showed he has big problems with slick, fast fighters.
I dont think Kessler has declined at all. He just cant beat a guy like Ward. Not with the style and speed that he can fight at. The only way Froch beats Kessler is if the loss kills his confidence. I dont think it will.
I think Ward fought the perfect fight ...he already had the Calzaghe blueprint on how to beat kessler...IMO i don't think there was nothing more Kessler could do...Ward used similar same tactics as calzaghe did ...if you remember after the calzaghe lose ..Kessler complained that calzaghe beat him via holding then punching ...Ward would of watched the calzaghe fight !
i don't see Kessler ever beating Ward in a return,,,nor going on to win the tournament...witch i thought at first he would :(

Kessler did not quit.
He was neutralized.
Ward showed everything.
Movement, punching, clinching when needed.
Kessler couldn't press the fight.
Ward wouldn't let him.
Finally, you speak the truth.
Im tired of hearing excuses from Kessler fans-look,his style was made for Ward. All styles like Kessler's get caught out by slick fighters with speed. For proof of this look at Pavlik vs Hopkins. Styles truely make fights, and I believe Kessler owns Froch and Abraham.
Like Kelly Pavlik,Mikkel needs to plant his feet, stand upright, and use a 1-2.This is too basic of arsenal against fighters with speed and lateral movement-slick fighters are used to going against these styles-they train for it.
When you guys watch Kessler beat up Froch, what will your excuses be?Mikkel is good at what he does, and has done against limited skilled fighters. He has a top jab,and a helluva good combination and power, but Ward knew EXACTLY how to neutralize this.Instead of demeaning Andre Ward's win, give him props and wait until Kessler fights Froch to say he is shot. You say Mikkel didn't look good after Calzaghe, but then say Ward has had limited opposition until Kessler-which is it? By saying Kessler was over-rated,what do you think Calzaghe was if he beat him (at least Kessler made it competitive with Joe-something he couldn't do with Andre)?
Kessler will bounce back and have a new belt in his next fight-you watch.Froch doesn't give weird angles, have speed, evasive skills or anything that will take Kessler out of his game.Froch stands at the perfect distance allowing Mikkel to thump him with jabs, combos, etc. If Dirrell had Carl hurt, trust me-he will be there for the taking for Mikkel.
Kessler still has it.

kessler never found the range
That was my impression also. Yes he was seriously thrown by Wards skills, but I felt there was "something else" going on.
His heart wasn't in it, it seemed he wasn't willin to go thro anything to get the win. Plus his head just wasn't there hence his timing was out! That has something to do with wards performance tho

Agreed. As much as I like Kessler it actually occured to me that he wasn't trying at some points. I even wondered if the fight was fixed.
Good question. Danish tabloids and newspapers have been wondering this too. Said he fought like a zombie. His old promoter Mogens Palle said he's ''Shot''

After the Perdomo fight, I thought there was a good chance Kessler was overrated. I was right. He's just not a complete fighter. He couldn't deal with Ward's movement, inside work, or anything. And even if Ward was dirty as he suggests (I disagree), he couldn't deal with that either.
if you look at his fight against Perdomo you could see the ring rust, but he was missing some amount of shots.
Look at the stoppage, after he caught Perdomo with the right, Perdomo went into the ropes, Kessler moved in and threw something like 6 punches, and only ONE landed yet the ref stopped the fight.

I think the legal problems Kessler has had with Pelle contributed to the bad performance. His last few fights have been against poor opposition with legal and management problems hanging over him.It is hard to train properly with that kind of uncertainty hanging over you.
