So in the opinion of Abel Sanchez - who trains IBF, IBO, WBA and WBC middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs), who faces Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs) this weekend from the O2 Arena in London, England - will his man be facing former two-division titlist, Saul Alvarez next September, as promised?
"Absolutely not," is his blunt answer to BoxingScene.com. "I don't think he's got the balls, I've said it before, I just think that eventually it's not Oscar (De La Hoya), it's not 'Chepo' (Reynoso), it's not anybody - it's 'Canelo'.
The two camps have a verbal agreement in place to match the two fighters in September of 2017. Sanchez has zero faith in the verbal agreement.
A few months ago Alvarez vacated his WBC crown rather than face Golovkin this fall as was mandated by the sanctioning body. Alvarez has since moved back to 154-pounds and signed on to to face WBO 154-pound belt-holder, Liam Smith on September 17th at AT&T Stadium near Dallas, Texas.
When the fight fell apart, then verbal deal came into play. Obviously, a verbal agreement cannot be enforced - it's up the individual fighters to sign the contract when it lands on the table and Sanchez believes that Canelo has no intention of signing on for that.
Sanchez continued - "Just like it's Gennady, it's not me, it's not Max (his brother), it's not Oleg (Herman, his manager), it's not Tom (Loeffler of K2 Promotions). It's Gennady that signs the contract, it's Gennady that says he wants the fight. The same for 'Canelo', 'Canelo' doesn't want the fight."
