DeGale May Turn Attention To Groves if Froch Walks Off

•Nov 20, 2014

DeGale can keep himself in the spotlight with a win over Periban this Saturday, live on Sky Sports Box Office, and has urged Froch to either face him or vacate his title.

George Groves is determined to keep himself on course to become the "complete fighter" with a demolition of Denis Douglin in Liverpool on Saturday. The 26-year-old super-middleweight - who holds the WBC mandatory challenger position with Anthony Dirrell before the end of March 2015 - has elected to take on the southpaw American, who was trained by his mother Saphya, as part of the undercard to the Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly rematch at the Echo Arena, which also includes Anthony Joshua and rival James DeGale.

It's been years since the two boxers traded punches in the ring, but there is still a lot of hatred between super middleweights James DeGale and George Groves. The two of them were amateur rivals and then face off in the pro ranks in 2011, with Groves handing DeGale his first career defeat with a twelve round majority decision. Next Saturday night in Liverpool, both DeGale and Groves will appear in separate fights on the Nathan Cleverly vs. Tony Bellew undercard from the Echo Arena. DeGale faces Marco Antonio Periban while Groves prepares for Denis Douglin.

Groves: DeGale Needs Me, To Froch He's Worthless

George Groves says a fight with his fellow British super-middleweight James DeGale is possible – but that DeGale needs the fight more than he does. Groves bounced back from a pair of dramatic losses to Carl Froch with a points victory over Christopher Rebrasse at Wembley Arena in September and will next fight Denis Douglin of America in Liverpool on November 22. DeGale will also be on that bill – he is scheduled to face Marco Antonio Periban of Mexico – and victories for the British duo could lead to calls for them to fight again. Groves narrowly won their exciting first bout on points at the O2 Arena in May 2011, a verdict DeGale disputed, and the beaten man has subsequently gone on to win nine bouts in a row since suffering that first defeat as a pro.

Edward Chaykovsky

•Sep 26, 2014

"The Viking Warrior' Mikkel Kessler (46-3, 35KOs) is still hungry for a trilogy fight with IBF/WBA 'regular' super middleweight champion Carl Froch. Kessler won the first bout with a hard fought twelve round decision in Denmark in 2010, and last May he lost the rematch by way of a twelve round decision at the O2 Arena in London. Kessler has been inactive since the rematch with Froch. He still intends to continue his career but wants a big fight. Recently Froch's rival, George Groves, signed a contract with Kessler's promoter Sauerland Event. Kessler says it's still too early for him to face Groves, but he's more than ready for another go with Froch.
