Froch Rips Groves: Not Tough Enough To Be World Champ

•Sep 23, 2014

There is no resolution to the hostility between British super middleweight rivals Carl Froch and George Groves. After drawing 80,000 fans to their rematch in May, the two boxers are no closer to expressing their support for each other. After losing to Froch, by stoppage, in two competitive contests, Groves returned last Saturday night at Wembley Arena in London and won a twelve round unanimous decision over Christopher Rebrasse to capture the EBU/WBC silver super middleweight titles.

EBU/WBC silver super middleweight champion George Groves is not convinced that a fight between Carl Froch and James DeGale will happen. DeGale is the IBF's mandatory challenger to Froch, who also holds the WBA's "regular" title at 168-pounds. Groves handed DeGale, an Olympic gold medal winner, his first and only pro career defeat. And Froch's last two ring appearances were knockout victories over Groves.

‘Saint’ George Groves (20-2, 15 KOs) returned in style on Saturday night. The Hammersmith boxer announced himself back on the world scene with a unanimous decision verdict over the tough Frenchman Christopher Rebrasse (22-3-3, 6 KOs) in a final eliminator for the WBC World Super Middleweight title. ‘’It feels great to be back,’’ said Groves. ‘’Rebrasse was a good opponent, a very tough guy, he took an awful lot of shots and kept coming. I knew it was going to be a hard fight. I felt in good condition but you always have to be cautious against a guy that has never been stopped. I want to entertain, I want to knock people out. I didn’t manage that tonight but I gave it real good go. Things are only going to get better from here. We’re getting ready to take over the world!’’

Four months ago, before 80,000 eager fans, ‘Saint’ George Groves was driven to the ring at Wembley Stadium atop a double decker bus, silhouetted against incandescent fireworks. Last night, at the slightly humbler arena next door, his arrival was a touch more muted. After two successive losses, the pyrotechnics were hand held by dancers and a brass band played him in. Despite the expectations of many, including George himself, that heady night back in May proved not to be his coming out-party as an elite fighter. A momentary 8th round lapse in concentration and Carl Froch’s wrecking-ball right hand revived old doubts about stamina and chin, doubts that may now take years to banish.
