punching power... natural or developed?

A couple of weeks after I started hitting the gym and working my legs -- squats, deadlifts, and cleans -- my punching power improved dramatically. My technique hasn't changed, but I am definitely making more noise with the gloves. From "SMACK!" to "BOOM!"
I have to wonder how many "natural" punchers are guys who come into boxing already possessing superior leg strength? Not just the endurance you get from roadwork and skipping rope, but explosive power in the legs and lower back.Last edited by fraidycat; 06-09-2006, 10:56 AM.

You hit a focus mitt and it goes "BOOM!", and people look around to see who it is. I love that. Four months I was trying to get that, and it came together when I started really working my legs. Maybe it's coincidence, but it seems to work for me.

Yeah I love hitting the mitts, I throw flurries and everything. Yeah I know there's a difference I guess it's the amount of power and the way you exert it.

this topic again!!!
you know, if punching power is genetic, then wouldn't rocky marciano's dad have been a champ? was boxing in muhammad ali's genes? were steve nash's parents skilled ball player's? was barry sander's dad a running back? see what i'm getting at?
You know what I'm saying, though, right? There's a big difference between "SMACK!" and "BOOM!"

just now thinking of it, the more experienced fighters i've known or talked to, wheather boxers or MAists, have never mentioned any specific genetics being the basis for a persons skill or power. not one.

Yes i do believe It was in alis genes, to be that good, he was lucky to be born with certain attributes that made his boxing easier then most. From speed to body machanics etc and yes he was born with the raw talent which was brought out by years of training. But training alone couldnt have made him what he was, he was born with it.

So if skill and power is nothing to do with genes, then we must all have the same chance in life to become a world champ. The way ur going on would suggest that those who train the hardest will be the sronger more skilled fighters, when thats not always the case. Oh matt Hughes has been described by that josh guy on the ufc of being genetically gifted with his strenght. Am not saying hes 100% right but my point is i would say he is experienced in the fight game and am sure he would argue that point with those experienced fighters u mentioned.

zigga, i'm sure he could argue, but who can't argue. you don't have to be smart to have an arguement.
who is this josh guy? and has he won any full contact open style tournaments? i might know who you're thinking of, possibly.
i watch a lot more pride fc than i do ufc these days.

it seems to be, and i could be wrong here, but that many people here may not be able to punch hard or have quick reflexes/responses and simply attribute this to being born with such and such potential.
actually, i don't mind this type of thinking much, because it only limits yourself. but when it is mistakenly applied to other people, it grinds me a bit.
a case in point - one example being kostya tszyu. when he started his pro career, he was knocking people out with ease. however, it's not exactly genetic in this sense as he has a method of hitting people harder through a trained concept of power generation. not even mentioning the hand hardening methods that he used to make his hands more solid. this, enabled him to punch with more power without having to worry about damage to his hand and the swelling that accompanied him after his fights. just wait until his book comes out and you'll see what i mean.
