honestly, not stepping in with a jab means you have nothing on it, just arm. If you are going to attack generally it will start with stepping in to range at some point.
every punch that can be thrown can have dangerous consequences whether you step in or not. Especially when timed like that.

I get what Barry was saying, but I think its easily miscontrued as "don't step with your jab."

I respectfully disagree with this vid fam.
I agree that stepping in can be dangerous, but then again any kind of advance or offensive movement carries a risk. I personally think stepping in behind the jab is probably the most effective and safe way of stepping in because you're keeping your opponent occupied & creating openings for yourself while doing so. A jab is also harder to successfully avoid or counter than punches are, and I personally think this knockdown was more a case of Marquez having impeccable timing than it was a case of Diaz exposing himself.
I dont think you need to step in everytime with the jab coz every boxer should be able to mix things up and be less predictable, but I do think it's essential to at least have stepping with the jab be second nature.

Stepping in can always be dangerous no matter what the punch is.Sonny Liston's second defeat against Ali ended in round one because Sonny was constantly stepping in without proper guarding when Ali gave him a counter to the chin.

Stepping in with your jab CAN be dangerous. Especially if that's the only way you know how to throw it.
I thought going to the left with your jab as most fighters back in the day did was the most fundamental jab. ie. Sugar Ray Robinson, Vitali Klitschko, Nicolino Locche, Hector Camacho, Willie Pep are a few guys that have made careers, great careers taking their jab to the left as a basic fundamental. Also JMM has won a lot of fights off that basic fundamental. Mayweather used it in round 8 to set Hatton for a Check Hook in Round 9. However as all of you guys said, I might be very wrong. It's 2013 maybe times have progressed and stepping in with the Jab is the new basic fundamental that has no defensive ramifications, if the athlete is not a Master of distance with their Mind, Eyes, Arms, and Legs. Again it's quite possible you guys are right. Maybe this was a dumb video.

I also like "coming forward with a jab". I want to and prefer to talk about how and why. I think the knowledge of something and knowing how, why, and when are two separate things. I can show my lil sister a Mike Tyson fight that results in a KO. I can ask her how the fight ended and I'm sure she will tell me a guy got KTFO. That's common knowledge. I just figure here on a boxing forum in the training section we'd be discussing training, "strategy", and option(s) on a higher level. So sure I agree that sometimes you CAN step in with the jab however from a Training perspective and higher understanding I want to know why, how, and when. So I'm really happy each one of you have programmed stepping in with your jab regardless of your opponent it is into your muscle memory. Now since you have all mastered that and believe in it as your 1st option. Maybe you should consider adding a few more options. Better to have it and not need it then blah blah right.

I don't think that anyone said you should always step in with the jab. you are arguing two different points and if you are going to put a video up in a public forum, then you should st least be open to conversation about the subject you brought up.
it seems you are very sensitive about criticism and all people were saying is that the punch marquez landed was more perfect timing than a bad decision by diaz. sure you should vary your attack and i think diaz understands this very well being a former world champion.
I find your imaturity to be off putting, you said we should have a dicussion yet are unwilling to discuss without sarcasm and vaguely hidden insults.
