400 isnt that many, but if you are doing sets of 50 thats pretty good.

So do you do 4 sets twice a day, 4 sets of 50 is a bit of a killer depending on rest period.

I can easy do sets of 25/30 40 max...I like to vary the press up though instead of standard, think someone else mentioned narrow/wide/diamond hand positions.

Explosive push ups are good aswell.

400 pushups is not "too much" to do, but it's good progress. Keep going.

The only people who say that pushups are a waste of time are conditioning coaches that have never boxed. The point of push ups is not to punch harder (practicing punching explosively on the heavy bag will do that, not fancy plyometrics). Pushups give you the stamina to keep punching with a decent amount of strength for extended periods of time.

If you can do 1000 pushups within 30 minutes, you can throw 1000 punches in a twelve round fight. Your lungs might be screaming, but your shoulders, chest, and triceps will not give out.

That's not to say that you can't replace pushups. You can do comparable exercises with weights. It's just a matter of preference.

Thanks for bumping my old thread. I have done 400 in a very long time. Thanks for motivating me to start again.

when i watch tv be it sports or whatever i do do 25 pushups every comercial. you will be suprised how many you can do. don't let the bros WHO CAN'T EVEN DO PUSHUPS TELL YOU IT IS A WASTE. THEY JUST CAN'T DO THEM. like i can't do lots of pullups. works for some but not me. some run a lot or bench a lot etc. try 300 a day with every 3rd day off doing them slow going all the way down. no routine is ****** if it helps you. i do more cardio than weight lifting for over 40 yrs plus and it makes me look great staying ripped, shreeded etc. at 54 i still do pushups. no different than bench pressing for rept at moderate weight. keep it up. add another calistenic routine. do it!

lately my workouts have been consisting of only shadow-boxing, push-ups and about 25 minutes of jump rope.

i am noticing huge gains in my chest and shoulders.

and i am at about 600 per day. usually over 3 intervals throughout the day.

                  i also mix them up.

sometimes sets of twenty. thirty or sometimes sets of ten, a burpee and then back down for ten to a count of fifty and then throw a round of jump rope in to mix up the degree of difficulty.

Just me, I don't understand the old-school bodyweight training styles. Can you make strength gains? Yes, obviously you can. However, you can make much better gains doing compound lifts such as heavy bench press, squats, deadlifts, etc.

I'd rather do a strict overhead press and Arnold press workout any day over a couple hundred pushups. And no, it's not because I "can't do pushups", it's because I make quicker and better gains doing compound lifting with barbells and dumbbells.

I know I'm in the minority, but I feel as though the best routine for a boxer (or any athlete) is a powerbuilding routine, not bodyweight, not strictly bodybuilding, not strictly powerlifting, not disregarding lifting at all, but powerbuilding.

In prison one of my homies would do 10 sets of 10, 9 sets of 9, 8 sets of 8, all the way down to 1. It adds up to about 400 push ups and they for about 30 seconds between sets. I tried it once working out but I couldn't even get through the 10 sets of 10 push ups. But my friend told me some people he was locked up with would all those push up again but in reverse. 1 set of 1, 2 sets of 2, back up to 10 sets 0f 10 again.
