The $5 mill guarantee is much like Arum's $8 mill offer to PBF, it looks GREAT on paper, so the promoters put it out there to the media. The media and message boards eat it up, and now you have a fighter who absolutely must be AFRAID of this fight because he won't take the offer. Well, we don't see all the particulars. There's all kinds of negotiation points in these contracts, including promoter options and what not. I'm not saying DiBella wants options (and Arum said there were no options for PBF in the Margarito offer), but there are just so many things we don't hear about.
But I think this instance is based on DiBella shaping a good deal for Winky and an awesome deal for Taylor, and DiBella has all the leverage here--they have the fight with Ouma ready to go. Winky, based on thinking he won the first fight (and the official result still being a draw, not a loss), wants more of a fair share. He's backed off demanding parity, but he surely wanted to see how much more he could get. Greed? Sure, but that's LIFE, not just boxing. He and Jim Wilkes clearly didn't expect DiBella to slam the door shut after they wouldn't take the offer.
I'm sure they are disappointed, as am I and all boxing fans, but they'll both win again this winter and then meet next spring for an even bigger event, more money to be shared, and we move on.
