I would not call Castillo I a "war". I give Floyd credit for winning, but a "war"? Ali fighting for 10+ rounds with a broken jaw is endurance. Ali nearly killing himself in Manilla is a war. But Floyd skipping around Castillo for 12 rounds a "war"? Please.

On one hand you have Duran, Ali, Leonard, Dempsey etc who are greats due to their opposition faced and methods of victory OR defeat. They were also HUGELY popular. Does their popularity factor into their place in History or are we purely talking cold assessment of their fights and boxing and physical abilities?
How many unpopular ATGs are there? My knowledge of boxing is far from encyclopedic but the only one I can think of who might be close to qualifying is Jack Johnson.
The relevence of this question pertains to Mayweather's popularity or lack of with the general populace. In this sense DLH with his gutsy yet flawed ring record but overwhelming notoriety is closer to qualifying than Floyd.
I think we can easily say that DLH has challenged himself far more than Floyd to this point. Does this matter? Sadly I think that until Floyd has a ring WAR with someone he will never be in the upper echelons of the history books. The Greats all pushed themselves to the brink and won despite overwhelming odds. Floyd has not done so so far.
I'll have to think about this, mate. Good question.

Boxing just isn't as big as it used to be. The welterweight and middleweight ranks were CRAMMED with incredibly skilled and talented fighters in the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's. I mean, two years into his career Robinson had already beaten one of the greatest middleweights of all time in Jake LaMotta. He also did it weighing in as a welterweight. Also keep in mind that he started his career at 135.

If Mayweather moves up to middleweight and takes out Taylor he will still not be the #1 fighter of all time. You see, even that could not be enough to compensate for 25 years and 200 fights against mostly world class and, in many cases, all time great competition. The problem is, the talent pool in boxing is just too small. As Anorak said, there just isn't enough quality competition around for Floyd to fight to prove himself better than Robinson, or say Harry Greb.

THANKYOU, KA... saying what I meant to say, but only far more clearly and concisely.

Anorak, I respect your views and opinions on this forum, but your pic of PBF is really in bad taste. I understand that his legal troubles have been disturbing, but that was a few years back and he seems to have cleaned up his act. Many people don't know this, but Floyd gives a ton to his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ask some of the elementary kids in GR that got the coats, gloves and hats -that they couldn't afford- from Floyd if he is a bad person and you'll get a much different answer. Keep the pic if you want, but just know that he does a LOT more good than bad, you just don't hear about the good.

joe louis fought terrible opposition for much of his career. He had a motife that followed him around. "bum of the month" ever heard of that? thats because every month, louis fought a bum.

of coarse he fought great opostion with marciano, braddock, and schemelling, but the vast majority were bums. but its not who u beat, its how u beat them, and louis disposed of them in stylish fashion!

Mayweather has demoslished corrales, beat castillo twice (once was close), wiped the floor with gatti, gave zab a beating, knocked out chavez and augustus, and ****d sharmba mitchel. those guys are better competition that what louis was fighting, and hes disposing of them just as beatifully!!!

i dont think that you CAN'T agrue that mayweather has GOAT potential. he is one of the best talents in the sport, period.

I cant stand mayweather! it makes me sick how much i have to stick up for him. mayweather is AMAZING!!!!!

I spoke to those kids. Apparently Floyd told them "smile, you little bitches or I'll show you what it's like to be Mrs. Mayweather. P4P baby, P4P!"

People sometimes forget that SRR had seventeen losses.
If Floyd takes on Hatton, DLH, Mosley, Winky and Taylor and wins them all, he is the greatest of all time.
