He's fighting Baldomir, which will make him the 147lb champ in a cakewalk. then he can go to 154 and beat Spinks and Mosley and DLH and claim that crown. then if he were to beat the reigning middleweight champ, I think he's a lock for the top 3 greatest ever and a case could be made for the greatest of all time. but he has to do all that and retire undefeated.
To be honest, in this age of alphabet soup, it's ridiculously easy for anyone to be a "multi-weight champ" should they desire it. I get sick of hearing about "multi-weight champs" to be honest, because as far as I'm concerned Floyd was not a champ at 140. If he beats Baldomir, then that's fair enough, because that's only one blip in four divisions, I can deal with that.

But look at how people talk about Holyfield being the only four-time champ of the world. Now, I love Evander, but how can you compare that to Ali's three-time achievement in the age of just two belts?

I really can't say that Floyd would be ashamed to be a top 10 all time fighter if he runs his career right from here. No need to be ashamed of only being better than 99.9999999% of all boxers ever.
I hear ya, but to hear some on here... man, I wouldn't even put Floyd as top 10 though. He's got skill, no denying that, but on his current resume he's not even close, IMO.

        Anorak great thread.

It's funny how everyone's all like, if he does beat these fighters, he will be one of the greatest of all time. Yes, he will, but he won't be GOAT....Big difference...

It's funny how there are people trying to say that Floyd is better than Sugar Ray...anyone that says that loses respect from me..

He's definitely not top ten, but he's also only 29 with some huge fights on the horizon. Worry about his place when he's all done.

I hear ya again, man, I just get pissed with how overhyped he is, that's all.

Floyd's best fight performance was still against his wife, IMO. Some solid shots landed there.

If Floyd beats Mosley, Cotto, Margarito, and any other star welterweights would any of you put him above Sugar Ray Leonard?

I just can't believe how people say stuff like The Paler (Hatton) is a bum who grabs and fouls and is overrated... yet if Floyd beats him it makes him better than Sugar Ray. WTF???

People need to accept - in my view - that there are eras where truly great fighters don't exist.

The only fighters I rate right now as being genuienly great off the top of my head are... well, Floyd in a way for ability... Joe Blow... and the Baby Faced Amigo.

I mean, the Baby Faced Amigo has a far better resume than Floyd Wifeleather, but he's not as regarded...

Take Margarito outta that equation because 10 years from now Margarito will be a footnote on boxrec. I would say he would also have to beat DLH, and 1 or 2 top contenders that go on to have excellent careers. A move up to 154lbs and 160lbs and beating someone like Jermain Taylor could put him in the top 5 for sure.

I currently dont have PBF in my top 20 though ATG's though.

Calzaghe is hardly an all time great. His resume is a laundry list of the same exact fighter time and time again. How many guys do you need to fight that stand in the pocket and don't move well or use the jab efficiently?

People use Brewer and Mitchell as big wins, both weren't good fighters at best, and Joe sleepwalked through both fights. Veit is a joke, no matter what his record says, and Jeff Lacy was along the same lines as all the others, just a bigger hitter. He has a lot more to do before you call him great.

Sorry, to clarify the point (which I admit I didn't make clearly at all, as 50% was still in my head and not written down).

What I meant was, boxers active TODAY with the potential to BE great.

As far as I'm concerned there's only a handful. Take any division above supermiddle. They're full of fighters who might be good to watch now, but will never go on any "all-time" lists.

Wlad could unify right now and still wouldn't get within spitting distance of any all time top 10 heavies poll.

But Floyd, Blow and Barrera have the potential to be genuine greats. In fact, I think The Amigo is.
