We'll never know with Ortiz. Looks good, but he chose the path of being built as a decent win for Wilder. He got paid, so that's fine, but there's zero ambition in that pathway.

Povetkin actually competed in the Heavyweight Division. He's miles ahead.

Ortiz maybe better, but we will probably never know. He’s fought wilder and done well but been knocked out twice, otherwise he’s not taken on anyone.

I think hes probably on a similar level to Povetkin skill/ability wise but thats mostly based on the eye test rather than actual accomplishments. So we dont know and probably never will because Ortiz only exists to crush cans and get knocked out by Wilder.

he was highly rated until that period where he was poor against Malik Scott, average against Dave Allen (remember David price caused him to quit) and then was consistently hyped by americans as if he was literally the second best HW in the world.
the hype train from pbc fans was what made the rest of us just be honest and say 'he's average'.

i should also add, he got done for nandrolone. so obv when he was juicing he was stopping guys like Tony Thompson who battered Price and naturally brits started rating Ortiz.
thing with artificial testosterone ie nandrolone, is that it damages androgen receptors and makes you weaker, increases estrogenic effects too. So basically ortiz became worse because of the nandrolone.
by the time ortiz fought wilder he had health problems and wasnt the same fighter who was once being hyped by british boxing fans esp.

Ortiz claim to fame was the Bryant Jennings fight because Jennings fought him 1 fight after Wladimir Klitschko. Ortiz knocked out Jennings in 7, whereas Klitschko went the full 12 rounds with Jennings. That's the fight that made people think Ortiz is possibly a top tier guy. I think Povetkin vs Ortiz is still a good match up, whether Povetkin wins or loses the Whyte rematch.

Apparently Ortiz inspired a 6 year old Povetkin to take up boxing. When Ortiz was in his prime, he gave a signed glove to young Alexander and said "one day you'll be fighting under the lights like me".

Whilst Ortiz's resume is not great, though he beat Jennings better than Joyce did, a lot of fighters took on other challenges to avoid Ortiz. When Hearn took Ortiz to England for a while, nobody wanted him, and we have some good HW's here.

He has skill, he has power, I think he has a good chin too, his time has likely past, I'd like him to give it one more go, but I give Wilder credit for those two wins, and I'd like to see Ortiz vs Povetkin, a good fight, even now, even if Whyte beats Povetkin. Belts don't have to be on the line for a fight to be good.

ortiz is left handed and about 6'5". most left handed cubans that big are playing baseball. incredibly rare. povetkin is an undersized european style HW. plenty of those around.
