Wasn't he intended to be the new Oscar?
Oscar never babied his fighters as much as other promoters and that’s one of the reasons I like GBP.

Yes Oscar is looking for the new Goldenboy but he also knows what it takes to become one. Fighters need to take on the best just as he did, Pacman did, and many other greats from the past.

If Ryan is legit kudos to the kid cause these are the fights that boxing fans want now not in two years time.

You realise you just called De La Hoya the worst promoter in boxing.

GBP is one of the biggest promotional companies so he can’t be that bad.

Every outfit has their own formula but GBP’s have been working just fine Id say.

Im not saying that Oscar throws his cash cows to the wolves every time but he takes more chances than other promoters.

He lost Canelo, and is coming out of retirement. GBP are probably going broke behind the scenes.

Agreed in principle. However, there's a big difference between Oscar and Manny. Oscar had a whole establishment behind him ever since he won Olympic gold, and all of this notwithstanding he was defeated whenever he fought at the very top, with two or three gift decisions added as a bonus. Whereas Pacman came from dirt and thrashed almost everybody put in front of him to become one of the greatest fighters ever. Which De La Hoya is not, in my book at least.

Having said that, you are right: it's good that Garcia is not being babied. It's a high risk fight vs Tank, though I doubt it will really happen as soon as they are saying.

Where do you think Oscar from? The Golden Boy was born and raised in East Los Angeles, CA. In the 80’s & 90’s East L.A. was considered the gang capital of America. Get it straight Oscar might not of come from the slums of the Philippines but he did come from the barrios of East L.A. to become on the best to ever done it and arguably the most marketable boxer of all time. Also, you mention the gift Oscar got what about the robberies like Trinidad or Mosley 2 he received? Anyhow, Oscar will always be remembered for fighting the best of his era and daring to be great against the greats that’s a lot more you can say from any boxer nowadays.

I only consider the Trinidad fight as a robbery against him, though he ran like a rabbit in the last four rounds of that one. Mosley 2 is debatable IMO. Anyhow...

Have you ever read Tim Kawakami's book about him? It explains quite well who Oscar really is in his deepest essence, ever since he was young.

Sure, he comes from East L.A. but he always kept a foot here and the other there, in order to appeal to both Latino and American audiences. He is not a man of his people, but a fake puppet with a false 32-teeth smile. Yes, he has gone on to fight big names and become a star, of course, but lost to the best he fought practically every time. Then again, with the whole boxing establishment behind him, definitely he could not have fought bums forever, or else he would not have been the cash cow that he was.

He bought The Ring magazine and turned it into a Golden Boy Promotion megaphone, firing an excellent journalist such as Nigel Collins of whom he could not stand the honest opinions. Became a big fish in the dirty waters of boxing promotion. And I'll spare the rest, addictions, drag and kitchen utensils, etc. because that has more to do with a wrecked psychology than anything else.
