Not sure what to make of the 'wins' this weekend

That kind of sums up my whole thread. After Derevy, I didn't even know what GGG had left. Now he looked really good against a guy around the top 10 probably at MW. It was a much better performance and not exactly sure what to make of it overall at this time.
For Smith, I wasn't sure what he really was after Ryder. Now I am even more unsure. He could have just been outclassed by a top pfp fighter, and then before that, maybe had a bad night against a tough matchup.
On different scales, I am unsure of both Smith and Kamil's level at this time. So it is hard to know exactly what to make of each win for Canelo and GGG here.Comment

I have to agree with that, and I don't say it maliciously. They do have some truly good or great fighters though.
I think Groves showed he was good enough, with some of the fights he had with other top guys. Maybe he was just always a guy who was a KO ready to happen against a big puncher though? I really don't know.
Hard for me to say that even that version of Groves was THAT much inferior to Ryder, ya know? Just not immediately seeing where the drop off came from.
My point wasn't to compare the wins on a like for like basis - just to compare them in the sense that 1) I really have no idea where Smith's level really is right now and 2) similar for Kamil. Smith obviously is a bigger scalp.
His low-end at SMW is probably Kamil's high-end at MW, and even in a best-case scenario where the rankings were about even, beating a guy a weight class up is a better win 9 times out of 10.
But Smith did lose to Ryder like 8-4 or 9-3. It wasn't a close fight. Canelo beat him better, but Ryder is maybe only 6-10 at SMW. So yeah, just really not sure what to make of Smith right now.
Smith went from looking like the number 1 guy at SMW 15 months ago, to looking like a big punching bag.Comment

Eh, Neither of these wins will go down as being career defining for either guy. Canelo would be better served fighting Plant or Benavidez. If not either one of those guys, the better fights are definitely at 160 and 175.Comment

I actually think 168 is pretty strong, especially if a lot of the talent at 160 is kind of hovering over 168 too.
Will definitely be interesting to see what the next 2 fights are for each guy. Canelo has been on a pretty tough run - will be interesting to see who he goes with next. GGG surely will have to face a top guy next.Comment

I still think you're giving him way too much credit. The best names on his resume are Callum Smith, Badou Jack & Carl Froch.
He lost to all of them.
You just have to accept the fact that the UK is better at hyping mediocrity than other countries.Comment

I don't disagree on that. No hate, but no one overhypes in boxing like the UK. Clear number 1, way above Mexico imo.
Man I can't unsee the fight Smith had vs Ryder. His fight vs Canelo was basically the same fight. Just him getting pretty battered from pillar to post.Comment
