Is Eddie Hearn overrated as a promoter?

I made this assertion last year and said Josh made Hearn - not the other way around. To understand why I said this: look no further than all the boxers he had before Josh and how none of them reached that star or superstar threshold. I got a loads of pushbacks/bollocking from fellow Brits on here when I said it but it's becoming more glaring now.

When Haney signed with Matchroom - he was the biggest young talent in the US. He was bigger than Garcia, Tank and Teofimo Lopez. However, isn't it funny that they have all surpassed him, in terms of starpower? Haney was meant to be the next big in US boxing - the new Mayweather. However, due to terrible matchmaking and Hearn's inexperience - Haney's star has dimmed a bit whilst the rest are on the fringe of becoming PPV stars.

In boxing, being a teflon promoter with a loudmouth, reminiscent of Puff Daddy in the 90s (all up in the videos) doesn't give your boxers notoriety - it only makes the promoter popular. Boxers become popular based on how they're matched, the highlight reel that comes from their fights, their level of talent, who they beat, etc.

Haney had no business fighting Gamboa. He gained nothing from the fight and it dimmed his starpower.

How do you define the best? The best in turning a young talent into a star or the best by virtue of having a boxer destined to become a superstar fall on his lap?

Josh made him rich and popular. So if it's based on that - then he's. But if it's based on developing talent - he's not.

Well, he manages and guide his fighters well and make them most money. What else does a fighter want?

Not sure if he is overrated or not to be honest. Considering he has only been a promoter for around 10 years, he does get judged harshly in comparison to the other well known promoters.

Yes, he has had success with Anthony Joshua, but he has also had success with the likes of Audley Harrison, Carl Froch, Tony Bellew, Kell Brook, Derek Chisora and more. Fighters who didn't have the superstar ability, and have had a lot more success with Hearn than with much more experienced promoters that came before him.

LMAO. You must be one of those who listen to that clown, Hatman, who claims Brixton but no one knows him in Brixton.

Promoters don't manage boxers. Their job is to develop boxers, matchmaking and market/promote them into stardom.

And when you look at the 3 things I listed up ^^^ Hearn is pedestrian in all 3. Matchroom doesn't know how to develop boxers, hence there's no promising young talent with starpower on Matchroom ATM apart from Haney who was already popular before he joined them. Matchroom might be the worst in boxing when it comes to matchmaking and they've ruined a lot of boxers. And Teflon Hearn does more to promote himself than his promote his boxers.

The only argument people make for matchroom is money. But what's the point of getting paid to get your career ruined in an unnecessary fight in short term, when you can 10x that in long term? That's where matchmaking comes in. Look at Kell Brook for example: if he hadn't fought GGG - he would've most likely beaten Spence and be in the mix for all the money in the 147 division right now. Dillian Whyte had no business fighting Povetkin since he's already guaranteed a mandatory and I said it when the fight was made. Buatsi had no business fighting the guy he fought since he has been inactive for a long time and because of covid. Josh Kelly got ruined in New York in a fight he was too green for. AJ had no business fighting Andy Ruiz on short notice for his US debut. And I won't be surprised if Okolie get ruined by Glowacki in Dec because I don't think he's ready.

None of these guys are even borderline stars. Most people in the UK won't even recognise them on the street. LMAO.

Chisora was Del Boy before he went to Matchroom. Hearn didn't make him. Audley Harrison is known for getting sparked.

And Hearn has been in the business for more than 10 yrs and he only got famous after Josh was signed to Matchroom 7 yrs ago.

Eddie Hearn is great at putting on big events. Give him a Canelo fight and he'll put on a great show. He's not good at building fighters and getting them to that Canelo level. AJ was a star coming out of the Olympics. Hard to mess that up.

Hearn has a passion for the game, and it shows.
