  • Comments Thread For: Benavidez: I'm Definitely Staying At 168; Just Gotta Clean Up My Diet A Little Bit

David Benavidez doesn't think his failure Friday to make weight is evidence that he needs to move up to the 175-pound division. The former WBC super middleweight champion still intends to compete at the 168-pound limit when he returns to the ring for his next fight. Benavidez believes he can get down to the super middleweight maximum again if he goes about the process more responsibly than he did last week at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

An explanation is not the same as an excuse.

Covid had an effect on a lot of fighters. Benavidez will easily make 168 his next time out. Hes not skin and bones on the scales like when Pantera Nery was trying to make 118.

David should stay at 168 he's only 23. I'm sure he can pick up another belt or 2. don't move up too young to be fighting the 175 champions..

He´s 6′ 1½″ with huge reach, 23 yo and clearly growing out of 168. I see no reason for him to keep torturing himself.

Lol. We know what he means. I know COVID had an effect on his camp to a certain extent, but to be three pounds over definitely had other things factor into it also. Hopefully he kicks himself into gear and stops shooting himself in the foot(intentionally or unintentionally). He's too talented to be having to start over again when he's been at the top on more than one occasion. He's giving the other names reasons to avoid him. Now they're talking about Canelo and Smith are interested in getting that belt. They sure weren't interested when he had it. He is a threat to everybody in and around his division(including himself) and they know it.

It's funny to me how nobody wanted the belt till he lost it on the scales now the vultures are circling. Whoever wins it should be mandated to give him a crack at getting it back.
