  • Pacquiao fans: Why did he fight David Diaz at 135 instead of Nate Campbell?

Campbell was the WBA/WBO/IBF lightweight champion of the world in June of 2008.

Why did the Pacquiao camp choose to go after a belt against the much weaker David Diaz instead? Isn't that a cherrypick?

Campbell was scheduled to fight Joan Guzman but Guzman missed weight and the fight was cancelled.

    Pacquiao-Campbell couldn’t have happened in summer 2008.

Same reason why PAC didn’t stay to unify all those belts... assuming Nate wouldn’t be difficult for PAC.

Why didn't it happen in 2008 after the Diaz fight?

Are you saying he should have fought Nate Campbell instead of De La Hoya?😂

Why would he stay and fight Campbell when he had the Oscar mega payday??

                I suppose not. Fair point.

I looked up what you said about Campbell and Joan Guzman. Their fight was supposed to happen in September of 2008. Campbell won the titles from Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz in March 2008.

It turns out Juan Diaz had called out Pacquiao before that fight. And it was him who was passed over in favor of picking David Diaz. This is from World Boxing News:

Juan ‘Baby Bull Diaz accuses Manny Pacquiao of ducking him in 2008

Ak & Barak asked Diaz if there were fights that he wanted but never got: “When I was a three-time world champion and undefeated, I called out Manny Pacquiao because he had moved up. Instead of fighting me, he fought David Diaz, and I wanted to fight David Diaz cause I wanted to be undisputed, and that fight never happened.”

                  You are right.

It was Juan Diaz that he should have fought for the WBA/WBO/IBF titles instead of picking David Diaz for the WBC.

                  I learned something today.

                    Diaz was with top rank
                    Campbell was with don king
Which fight do you think would go 1st?

Campbell was on the radar after Diaz. Two things happened why it didn’t work out

                    1. Campbell had a fight scheduled against Joan Guzman. Guzman failed to make weight. Fight got cancelled and things became somehow complicated

                    2. Enter DelaHoya mega match. Surely you would pass up this opportunity. If Pac lost (which was expected btw), he would have gone back to 135 and the Campbell fight would have been possibly materialized. Sh.it happened though. With Pac’s success at his 147 debut, no way he’d be going back down to 135 where he would starve himself a little bit.
