When did Mayweather stop caring about his legacy?

Gone are the days of Mayweather taking on dangerous opponents like Corrales and Castillo. Gone are the days when he seemed hellbent on proving himself as a great fighter. Now he'd rather play patty cake for a few million bucks than defend his reputation as the best fighter in the world (and make a fortune doing it).
Add Mayweather's name to the list of potentially great fighters who lost it once they got a taste of riches and the high life. From this point on it's minimum risk, maximum profit. Just watch this guy make a few more easy defenses and retire, all the while comparing himself to Robinson, Leonard, Greb etc. etc. while the real boxing fans hang their heads and sigh.
hes still movin up into a weight where no one thinks he belongs
but just now
instead of outboxing brawlers n punchers
he wants to outbox a boxerComment

Boloney.
If Floyd cared about his legacy, if he really wanted to establish pound-4-pound greatness, he'd take on the best, end of story.
All he's done is dominate 130 and 135. He was not the best at 140.....that title belongs to Ricky Hatton, who was the champ, who Floyd did not meet.
At 147, he's beaten former 140 lber, who Tszyu stopped in 3, Shramba Mitchell and former welterweight champ, Zab Judah. He still hasn't beaten the champ, Baldomir, or his main competition for #1 behind the champ, Antonio Margarito.
Right now, Floyd is on the fast track to becoming an optical illusion, a myth with no substance. He's making it obvious it's the money and not the history he cares about.
Beating Spinks will prove nothing; and Cory's got a chance to upset him....I hope he does.
Floyd's wasting his potential and his chance at greatness; and if he's gonna waste it, I'd rather it be definitive than obscure so I don't have to argue with some numbskull ten years down the road about why he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breat as Sugar Ray Robinson. He wouldn't fight Hatton, Cotto, Margaritto, or Baldomir, thinking his "legacy" (such as it is) is beyond reproach.....well, it's NOT.
I hope Spinks boxes his ears off.Last edited by K-DOGG; 08-10-2006, 03:31 PM.Comment

Originally posted by amagninAgain you have missed my point. I still don't say that Floyd is ducking Margarito and I still don't say that Margarito is the biggest fight out there... he is just the most entertaining fight that can be made RIGHT NOW. And I never said that Margarito could beat DLH at 147 or 154. And Margarito's resume isn't that impressive but that doesn't mean he isn't a good fighter. I have always said Margarito-Mayweather would be an interesting fight, I just used to protest the idea that they had to fight NOW. But after Floyd decided to fight Spinks my opinion changed. Spinks is a crappy opponent and offers nothing...not even money that Margarito could offer. So if you're saying that I prefer a Margarito-Mayweather to a Mayweather-Spinks fight then YES I do. I have never strayed from that opinion.Comment
