Comments Thread For: Atlas: Ruiz, In Better Shape, Would Have Still Lost To Joshua

I credit AJ for being able to adjust his whole fighting style and training for a different fight sticking to the game plan.
That mater-class performance is over-rated because Ruiz was so out of shape that made AJ look so much better than the first fight.
I am not saying that Ruiz would had beaten him again but I wonder what would had happen if Ruiz would had been able to apply more pressure and see if AJ would go into his next gear or gas out.
The very few times Ruiz was able to get in AJ still looked lost at those points.Comment

It all boils down to acknowledging defeats and working on your mistakes. Atlas is right. Joshua never came up with excuses after the lose. He even described Ruiz hands as "punch from the gods". He went back and worked on himself and got the victory. That's Joshua for you setting himself up as an ATG.
Unlike American boxers who do not know how to accept defeats; worse coming up with terrible excuses for losing.Comment

Yup. Somehow in boxing circles it has become fashionable to hate Atlas. He is an outspoken New Yorker and what you see is what you get. Atlas has his approach and it actually works well for kids like Ruiz who need the proverbial foot up the @33 when it comes to sticking to the plan. You guys hate Teddy Atlas for whatever reason, but he is right and you know he is. Ruiz does not have a champions mentality and that's why he didn't train or be aggressive in the rematch. He has some of the tools, but discipline is not one of them obviously haha. I know a lot of you idiots want to say that AJ ran in the rematch, but again, tell me how you run from someone and yet you out land on them by 2 to 1???? you guys are seeing what you want to see in the fight and then turn right around and say that Tyson Fury's fights are the "sweet science" hahahah. The point is, get over yourselves and pray to God that we start to get the big fights now that Wilder isn't holding that belt hostage any more.
I do think Teddy likes a bit of mustard, relish and red onion sauce with his hot dogs....Albeit while it is true that Ruiz might not have won if he was in shape, he would have done a lot better in the ring than he did.
Ruiz does apply pressure well. He could cut the ring better, and thats part of experience and a good trainer behind you. But this kid moves very well.Comment

How is he wrong here? The weight is a poor excuse. He's been big his whole life by his admission.
If AJ fought the kind of fight alot of people wanted him to, Ruiz would have probably had a lot of success.Comment

I agree with most of what you said but Ruiz did train for this fight. He was hugely overrated after the first bout and AJ was underrated. You guys hate Teddy Atlas for whatever reason, but he is right and you know he is. Ruiz does not have a champions mentality and that's why he didn't train or be aggressive in the rematch. He has some of the tools, but discipline is not one of them obviously haha. He knew, he even said it in an interview with Sky Sports. Thats why I was so surprised when it appeared that he didn't do anything to prepare for that. It's always the same thing with certain people on here. It's all, "we dont want excuses" when someone from the UK takes a loss, but when they win the other guy has a list of excuses and they help add to them. As for Ruiz, how could he not have know AJ was going to box him from the outside in the rematch? Everyone else did.Comment

Ruiz doesn't have quick feet at any weight, go watch his other fights, he simply does not have quick feet to close a mobile opponent down. In the first fight he caught AJ planted flat footed.its not an excuse, but AJ made a misjudgement and a tactical error and Ruiz capitalized. AJ adjusted in the rematch, in my opinion he was a bit too cagey but he got it done in one sided fashion.
He wasn't going to be closing him down if he was 250, that's just not him. He requires you to plant your feet and exchange, Joshua wasn't going to do that so he loses regardless of weight, and without 280lb of ballast behind him he may well have got hurt tbhLast edited by Earl-Hickey; 04-09-2020, 06:11 AM.Comment

Weight is an issue gain 20 and go take a jog and tell me if those 20 pounds made a difference or Roberto Duran at 147 fighting a Sugar Ray first fight than Roberto at 168 in 3rd fight he was slow as hellComment
