  • Comments Thread For: Hearn: I Expect Wilder To Request Rematch - Where Else Can He Go?

Tyson Fury must now face Anthony Joshua to finally crown an undisputed heavyweight champion. That is the view of Eddie Hearn, the promoter of the WBO, WBA Super, IBF and IBO world champion Joshua. Fury sensationally dropped Deontay Wilder twice at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night, exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office, ESPN+ and Fox Pay-Per-View, before stopping him inside seven rounds, after the corner threw in the towel, to claim the WBC world heavyweight title.

I have a feeling that Ruiz-Wilder would look like Kownacki-Washington but it’s a smarter choice than rematching Fury. He would hit Ruiz cleanly a few times.

I agree that I can’t see what else wilder can do.

If he comes back gets a knock down (which is possible despite what everyone says immediately after a result) then it changes everything.

The problem is that many argue he lost the first fight too, so losing a third would destroy him and potentially end a fight with Joshua?

The alternative might be to go for good but not too end heavyweights such as a Povetkin or Takam and try and earn his place back to fight Joshua?

If I was him I would avoid Parker, Ruiz and Whyte - they are all risky now and if he were to lose to any then his career is all but over !

I'm down for a rematch, but its just a bad stylistic match for Wilder.

His two biggest assets are his power and his length; Fury is too big though for Wilder to be able to utilize that length. Against guys who are shorter than he is, or even equal reach, Wilder can fight his fight and wait for the opening to land the right. Fury is just too darn big and is the ultimate 'smotherer'.

Fury is kryptonite for all the modern big/tall heavies because he is bigger, he can just lock them up before they get close enough to do anything.

It’s funny, once the book is out on you as a fighter, it’s out. Look at Mike Tyson after the Buster Douglas upset. He couldn’t beat top fighters like Holyfield or Lewis later on. Both took the fight right to him like Buster did that night. But Holyfield and Lennox and Ali all could come back from defeats because they were all great fighters with superior boxing skills. Wilder not so much.

Thanks Captain Obvious!!! Why in the hell would he NOT take the rematch? He just made 28 million guaranteed purse plus a 50/50 split on all other revenue from last night. The rematch clause said 60/40 split for Fury in the 3rd fight. That is still another 20-30 million for Wilder. Jesus Christ Hearn STFU!!! The only way it doesn't happen is if Wilder has a serious injury preventing him from fighting.

One thing I would say, which I’m surprised hasn’t come up. - is the choice of referee.

This isn’t a criticism of the referee but there are different types.

This one allowed a bit of dirty behaviour close up which suited fury down to the ground. He has done that before, I believe I even saw him referee previous fury fights?

If I was in wilders camp I would’ve been doing my research and making sure that type of referee was not picked.

People talk about USA vs uk fighters and this night actually be an occasion the uk ref helps wilder - would be better rematching in the uk?

Also I think Joshua against fury would potentially have the same question, although the one thing AJ does have is the close upper cut which might have more potential in a similar situation

Wilder is possibly in a lose-lose position now with this. Fury seems to have his number but if he doesnt go for the rematch what else can he do? He can hardly go back to fighting bums after this, it'd look ridiculous. But if he fights a none Fury/AJ top 10 level guy like Whyte or Ruiz theres still a serious element of risk involved only with far less reward.

I think Wilder should go for the Fatboy (Ruiz) as a litmus test. It's either he has it or hasnt still. This would be a great.clash with showmanship from both sides. 2 words TEDDY ATLAS
