first off the "Clauses" are your assumptions but anwyays I kill that noise too

Mayweather had teh same clauses and fighters STILL took the fight, Wear handicap gloves, drain yourself 2lbs, catchweights etc etc.

The only difference here is MORE MONEY available to fighters, they can NOT fight canelo and still make MILLIONS where in the past that wasnt true.

Why make the canelo fight and risk/lose your 0 right now for x amount when in 3-4 fights you can make that same amount and CANELO OPTIONS is still possible down the road for MORE MONEY. thats all these figthers mentality, take charlo for instance, he been yapping canelo name but NOW ITS CLEAR HE HAD NO INTENTIONS OF EVEN TRYING TO GET THAT FIGTH MADE!. I am in no way trying to muddy anything. I am trying to offer a reason why guys would turn down the cash cow when they never did this in the past. You even point out that the cash cows in the past had things in the contract, "clauses" for lack of a better term, and that didn't prevent guys from taking the fights.

The top names seem to be getting more money but that hasn't trickled down to guys like Smith such that he can turn down a Canelo fight that, according to ODH, is 3-4 times what he ever made.

Charlo allegedly was made an offer yet we didn't hear about it for a year, and only heard about it when the talks for Murata were announced. But that is another debate for another time.

According to Hearn, Smith and BJS turned down Oscar's initial offer, which was the same amount for both guys, but negotiations are still ongoing, and the one who ends up accepting the lowest offer will probably get the fight.

Interesting strategy from GBP and ODH. Put together a list of potential opponents. Give the opportunity to the fighter willing to take the least amount to fight. When the offers are "refused", go to the press and make it seem like everyone is afraid, unwilling or unreasonable.

I love how bazooka has the audacity to say that these guys are *****es and have zero confidence in themselves, yet it's Canelo who's constantly trying to stack the cards in his favor. If he was so confident he wouldn't repeatedly have weight stipulations in contracts or always be linked to the possibility of there being one. He's already a great fighter as it is. By Charles Brun: With Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith both having rejected offers from Golden Boy Promotions for a fight against Canelo Alvarez on May 2, the Mexican star is turning his sights towards a unification fight against IBF super middleweight champion Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant.


Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn says he thinks that Plant, 27, is the third option for Canelo, according to Talkboxing. Hearn says that Plant has already been approached about the Canelo fight twice, which means he’s got a shot at getting the fight.

“He’s [Plant] gonna want more than Callum and Billy,” said Hearn to Talkboxing.com.

Hearn is still hoping that Golden Boy will agree to what he wants for Saunders or Callum to face Canelo. He still believes that the negotiations are alive between Billy Joe and Callum despite Plant looming in the background.

Saunders and Callum may have priced themselves out for Canelo fight
Hearn says that Callum and Saunders aren’t being “GREEDY” in asking for than what Golden Boy Promotions has offered to Callum and Saunders, but they want what the standard is for a fight with Canelo.

The Mexican star’s last two opponents Sergey Kovalev and Daniel Jacobs both got $12 million, so it appears that Hearn is putting Saunders and Callum in the same category as those guys. Unless Hearn comes back with a much lower asking price for Callum and Saunders, it’s likely that Canelo and Golden Boy will be moving on towards a mouth-watering fight with Plant.

For Canelo, he’s clearly much better off facing the American Plant next rather than Saunders (29-0, 14 KOs) or Smith (27-0, 19 KOs), who are both from Britain, and have NEVER fought in the U.S before.

Saunders has an evasive style of fighting, which would require the 5’8″ Canelo to chase him around the ring all night. That’s not the type of fight that Canelo’s boxing fans will want to watch on the Cinco de Mayo holiday on May 2, but Plant might not be the right style either.

Plant is a defensive fighter, who hits and moves. He can do everything Saunders can, but better. At this point, Plant might be the toughest of the three for Canelo in terms of his style. Canelo would be showing a great deal of courage in facing Plant, but he’d have a lot to gain if he wins. The U.S fans are familiar with Plant, and they’ll be tuning in if Canelo elects to fight him on May 2 on Cinco de Mayo.

Plant is with Premier Boxing Champions, and fights on Fox. That could make it difficult – but not impossible – for Golden Boy to set up a fight between him and Canelo.

Plant needs to shine against Feigenbutz
Now that Saunders and Smith have priced themselves out of the Canelo fight, Alvarez will likely be keenly watching Plant’s title defense on Saturday. The American talent ‘Sweethands’ Plant (19-0, 11 KOs) will be defending his IBF title against mandatory Vincent Feigenbutz (31-2, 28 KOs) at the Bridgestone Arena, in Nashville, Tennessee. Plant vs. Feigenbutz will be televised on Fox Fight Night and Fox Deportes.

Canelo (53-1-1, 36 KOs) needs an opponent on May 2 that will attract the U.S viewing audience on DAZN. The question is would Saunders or Callum fit the 29-year-old superstar’s requirements for that date? It’s one of those situations where Golden Boy would need to create a poll consisting of Callum, Saunders & Plant in asking fans who the better option would be for Canelo to fight on May 2.

If the poll is limited to just U.S fans, then it’s pretty obvious who will be selected. Plant is clearly the far bigger name, but he’s also got the toughest style for Canelo. Saunders is looking faded at this point in his career, and was lucky to win his last fight against Marcelo Esteban Coceres last November. And Callum recently put in a terrible performance in beating John Ryder by a close 12 round decision in his last fight in November.

Joshua goes through this too, when you are the cash cow then others would take advantage of this situation. Mayweather and De la Hoya were lucky this wasn’t happening during their era.

This isn't new what is new is in the age of social media all these deals and details that don't get made are all public.

Winky Wright famously turned down a massive career payday offer from Oscar. It was never made public at the time and only came out years later confirmed by both sides that he was offered a contract to fight Oscar but turned it down asking to be paid the same amount Oscar had offered bigger star fighters Trinidad and Mosley. He tried to hold out for more and it backfired Oscar moved on to someone else who cashed in the lottery ticket but in the mid 2000's there was no Twitter and Instagram. Winky famously never got a fraction of the pay he demanded went on to Draw against Jermaine Taylor for a fraction then moved up to fight Hopkins for less money and lost. Refused to fight for 2 yrs as he demanded bigger money when he finally came back lost again for less money to P-Will then sat out 3 yrs for bigger offers and lost to Peter Quillin for peanuts. Guys like smith etc CANT AFFORD A LOST! Thurman didnt want a Mawyeather figth either cause his career was young and couldnt afford a Lost.

Who wanted the fight, Khan, guerrero, Berto, Cotto, etc who career was already ending.
who wanted a Canelo fight GGG, Kovalev, Cotto, Martinez, etc who career is alrady ending.

Good posts...just kind of hit me...but Canelo put a weight clause on Rocky Fielding at 168...and it was a little murky, but apparently had one on Kov as well.

My guess is that it isn't about the money for some of these guys...but rather that Canelo and co. are likely, imho, putting clauses in there to hamstring some of those guys at 168.

If they did it for Rocky Fielding, why wouldn't they do it for guys much better than him?

If any of those guys are getting $8 million or close to that though, with no clauses in there..they should take that all day.

Canelo is top 3 pfp on like everyone's list...how is it better to avoid fighting him, and the big payday you receive, and instead fight guys for 1/5th the amount? I don't get that at all.

This is my point as well, about why some criticism of Canelo is very very valid...great fighter too imho...but yeah he has some real asterisks by his name as well.
