I had heard of Toney before. Never seen him fight or maybe never had seen him at all but I knew the name. I was in my early twenties and I had subscribed to premium cable channels because I wanted to watch the tv show “barber shop” based on the ice cube movies, but starring Omar Gooding instead of Cube.
Once I had the channels, I was flipping through channels one day and came across Toney v Peter. Maybe it was sloppy, maybe it wasn’t. I don’t know because that was the first time I watched boxing on tv. I do remember thinking Toney had great moves on the inside and remember him slipping and countering. I was in front of my TV moving and slipping and shadow boxing too. For whatever reason I thought Toney won but he ended up losing. After that I started looking around the internet to find a good boxing site that would tell me when it actually came on TV and ran across the rings website that had a schedule. The rest is history.
I’ve never been a sports fan. Don’t watch hoops, football, soccer, baseball. Nothing. But that ***** captivated me somehow. I went a few years even watching boxing on the Spanish channels. However many years later, I’m 38 and have travelled out of state to a couple fights, made it to quite a few here in Houston, and got a lot of my football and basketball fan friends locked in to the sport.
So James is excused. When he was old and washed up he made me a fan, and I’ve converted at least 6 more people in to boxing fans directly. Attending fights and buying PPVs. So that’s gotta count for something ! he made 7 fans ! Let him in the hall !!
