It would be interesting to see the results though. I am surprised somewhat to even hear they'd do it though as, let's say they actually were necessary for one of these fights, and they go to those cards and they're just ridiculously outta whack with the original three cards? Or if they are publicised, or just leaked, a long time down the road from when "example fight" was held, and you end up with a situation where they are inadvertently telling a fighter who, on the night was declared the loser, and now "whelp, remember that fight where you swore you got totally effed? Well, yeah, you apparently really did cause these guys woulda gave you the fight..." I dunno, just seems a thing that could later create a lot of headaches. It also seems like something that could be made into a good thing in theory, but boxing fans and those in the sport are often so jaded, and many of the athletes and their teams have had boxing do them dirty enough to where being jaded is understood, that this setup would, in the end, just have people getting even more tin foil hats out.
I think more judges is better anyway (personally I say 5 and discard the outlying results) but in this case it was simply due to the exigences of the Tourney - where scheduling requires that one fighter proceed in the competition. Having Draws would have just made the damn thing unworkable. I'm not sure how the relevant sanctioning orgs viewed this however... it's possible that for the purposes of the belts involved the incumbent titlist would retain in the event of a Draw from the three main judges (per their normal rules)even if the extra judge or countback determined the other fighter should go through.

Anyways. This is what the WBSS have to say about the 4th judge:

Here is how the fourth judge can come into play:

In the case of an Ali Trophy Final ending in a draw on the three official judges’ scorecards, or ends as a no contest or no decision and the official master scorecard, containing the three official judges scores does not determine a winner, the scorecard of the fourth judge will be added to the master scorecard to determine who wins the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

If two of the now four judges score the bout in favour of one Boxer A, or in case of three draws on the original scorecards, the Boxer A who is ahead on the fourth scorecard, such result shall be considered that Boxer A wins the tournament.

    Count Back:

If the bout still remains a draw, after adding the fourth judge’s scorecards to the master scorecard result, then the World Boxing Super Series will use the ‘Count Back’ method in order to determine who wins the final.

The Count Back method is a ‘sudden death’ method of scoring using the three official judges’ scorecards to determine who wins. Beginning with the scorecards for the 12th or last round that occurred, the boxer who won that particular round on at least a majority of the three scorecards will become victorious.

If the bout was scored evenly in the 12th round or the last round that occurred, the winner boxer will then be determined by who won at least a majority of rounds in the preceding round.

If neither boxer won the next to the last round on at last on a majority of the three official judge’s scorecards, each preceding rounds scorecards will be examined until a round where one boxer was declared the winner of that round on at least the majority of the three officials’ scorecards.

    • I thought Prograis had the fight beaten out of him in the 10th but he came back well in the 11th and 12th. Respect.

I thought Taylor was a bit sloppier than I've seen him before. He was stepping back in straight lines with his hands down and allowing Prograis free shots at the end of some exchanges.

      • Put it into perspective for you guys across the pond, Taylor is from Edinburgh and the fight was in London. People crying hometown decision. That is equivalent of a Montreal fighter getting a home decision at MSG New York. 7-5 Taylor...

        • I'll rewatch in a day or two but on first viewing I thought Taylor edged it. Prograis finished stronger though, hope he's back in another title fight within a year

Prograis would beat Ramirez, infact would pick him to win clearer than Taylor. Prograis would box outside and land eyecatching shots vs Ramirez, take a decision. But if Taylor-Ramirez happened it would be a dogfight war of attrition where win or lose Taylor would end the night looking like he did last night.

I actually think he’s a pretty funny troll sometimes, but if he’s actually being serious then yeah he would meet the mental ret@rdation level of Seckbach, which is plankton level.

            • Had it 6-6 draw. Helluva fight, very physically grueling with lots of swings in momentum. Felt that Taylor fought a bit "chippy" and did a little more of the holding but nothing to warrant a deduction. Prograis was almost a little classy in the post-fight interview and I disagree with him when he said the "better man won", I didn't think either was the better man. Both fought like warriors.

I believe it's just one additional judge, who scored it 116-112 Taylor.
