I mean it's just all semantics man and I don't really understand the over the top criticism on this one...SD and his team could have sent in a contract as well for May 5th...I don't know if they did.
Whether or not SD would have fought on May 5th is an opinion ya know...based on what I've seen, both with that negotiation and with other SD negotiations, I personally don't think he would have taken the fight on May 5th.
And even if he would have I don't blame GGG and his team for taking on Vanes instead...again I think if G did fight SD then all the people giving G flack now would say he was ducking Andrade instead...if people really want to hate they can find a reason ya know...I just try to treat every situation and fighter objectively and go from there.
The criticism is towards any GGG fan trying to project Vanes and Rolls as anything other than glorified sparring sessions/exhibition fights. It's laughable to think that a fighter makes decisions based off of what people would say and even more laughable that when criticism or judgement is levied, the seeming defense is "well if he'd done something different people still would have complained". The only thing that's applicable are FACTS, not ifs and theories. Did the WBC order Charlo/GGG? Yes - Fact. Did GGG say he would not fight Charlo? Yes - Fact. Did Andrade call out GGG when he had no fight scheduled? Yes - Fact. Did GGG decide to fight Rolls instead? Yes - fact. The who said it was all about the belts, seemingly has only focused on fighting Alvarez over the last 2 plus years. Does that make him a businessman? Yes.Comment

It's not so much about criticism, its about acknowledgement. GGG could have fought Dervy May 5, 2018 and elected not to, knowing that his only choices were fight Dervy on the 5th and keep the IBF belt going into the Alvarez rematch or fight a soft touch, drop the IBF belt, and then fight the Alvarez rematch. He chose soft touch, just like he presumed that he'd get the trilogy this September and took a soft touch in Rolls.

It is an opinion as to whether SD would have been able to fight on May 5th
GGG could have fought SD after May 5th...but that would have involved messing up his training camp and possibly further postponing his big money fight with Nelo...it would have then gone to the following May...as SD-GGG would have happened in June at the earliest and September probably wouldn't have happened for GGG-Nelo 2.
No one is really hyping up Rolls or Vanes lol...GGG did what he needed to do and got the early KO...but yeah they weren't exactly ATGs...but neither was Rocky Fielding, Matt Korobov, Hugo Centeno, Fox, Walter etc...not every fight is going to be a killer.
WBC did order Charlo-GGG - and I never heard anything from either guy claiming they really wanted the fight...was Charlo making any noise for that fight? No...because no one still wants to really face GGG...you don't really get paid well and you will very likely lose and possibly get hurt...at least with Nelo you get a huge payday.
GGG never said he would not fight Charlo...that was Loeffler that said something like that.
The Andrade stuff...I mean come on...calling someone out...that's now a sign of the other guy ducking? lol...send in a contract if you want the fight...I guess Nelo was ducking Marcus Browne too.
If Andrade or Charlo were out here fighting killers I may see your point...but they avoided each other and every other good fighter basically at 154 when they were there...and they are doing the same thing at 160...why?
Because they can get paid roughly the same to fight anyone besides Canelo...anyone thinking they are really clamoring to fight GGG, even at G's age, is a little off imo...that is still a very high risk low monetary reward for them.
But hey people can believe whatever they want my friend...if you want to believe all those things, then by all means do it...that's what being a fan is about sometimes...but a lot of that stuff isn't 'fact', even if you really want it to be
No hard feelings though, good chattingComment

The economics of boxing have become totally out of wack. PBC deserves the blame for this when they tried to takeover boxing a few years ago and failed. They were and still are over paying fighters and they lose money on just about every fight they have.
Other fighters not in PBC started demanded PBC type money even though it made 0 economic sense to the promoter. This is why Garcia left Top Rank. Now it is happening in DAZN. No way in hell does SD deserve $5.5 million let alone $7 million. Canelo brings in more money than GGG so why the hell would anyone pay SD $5.5 or $7 million to fight GGG.
I have a feeling PBC is pushing SD to do this. I think PBC is trying to isolate Canelo. Get him stripped of his titles, take away any opponents he may face by pricing themselves out. If PBC can't have Canelo then they will try and destroy Canelo and GB. DAZN's absolute incompetency is actually helping PBC achieve this goal.Comment

Oh I see what you did there. The good ol' "question with a question". Makes it an interesting conversation, isn't it? Its like an argument of proving God's existence because it has never been disproved. Add a tea pot on a Martian orbit to that one as well. And unicorns.Comment

I could see them trying to force Canelo into a corner. Also it's true boxing finances are weird when you have the huge earners and mandos involved. 35% makes some sense unless it's against the mega stars and you're a D side. A fight with a rando will do as well as a fight with SD... hence 35% isn't viable and from their perspective not even close to being worth it.
Now, those days are no more. It has become a constant regular thing for fighters to turn down accepting a match with the sports biggest money makers. Even though certain fighters were offered more money than they ever made prior and more money than they are economically worth. Wilder turned down Joshua $100million deal with DAZN to fight Wilder, he also turned down a $50million deal w/o signing to DAZN to fight Joshua. He could not make anywhere near those amounts fighting anyone and now that kind of money is gone since Joshua lost. Garcia turned down huge money to fight Miguel Cotto in Cotto's farewell fight and in hindsight it was a terrible mistake by Garcia. Stevenson turned down big money to fight Hopkins and Kovalev. And we all know what happened to Stevenson as he will never get another paycheck in the boxing ring again. And now we have SD turing down $5.5 million to take on Canelo. This amount is 12.5x more than SD made against (what was then his biggest purse) Jacobs.
These were just a few examples. There are many more. The common thread is most of the fighters are associated with Al Haymon. Haymon is doing his fighters a disservice and eventually he will be sued in the coming years just like Don King.Last edited by jdp28tx; 08-06-2019, 12:45 PM.Comment
