Its really hard to prevent this when the goal in boxing is to punch the other guys brain. A great start would be to have a competent medical team, trainers, and referee that can identify the early signs of brain trauma.

    Anyways, im disgusted by this.

How do you want to prevent deaths in the "sport" where the goal is hitting the other person in the head repeatedly until he/she loses consiousness?

Olympic boxing is the only relatively safe form of boxing.
They can set a limit on the number of punches that are allowed in the head & force the boxers to attack the body instead.

I don't see comments when I click on it. Are there actually people talking negatively about Max or something?

I just realized that more education should not just be for refs and trainers. Should be for fighters themselves.

if Buddy had told Maxim inearly rds, "You can't swallow, I'm calling the fight" Maxim sure would have resisted, but maybe not if he had been told that's a sign that he's already sustained some brain damage or swelling and needs to get to a hospital asap.

everyone is so cheap in boxing

the worst-case scenario should always be in the minds of those in power

there needs to be a doctor looking at the fighter in between rounds. if there was, then it would have been a huge red flag that he was not drinking water. instead they have some security guard looking to see if no rules are being broken. it is so backward it is unbelievable

            immediate oxygen to the fighter

forget post-fight interviews in what is such a brutal fight

Good thread! A lot good ideas being thrown around, and everyone has a valid point. Being in the medical field, I believe having a good competent physician will help reduce severe injuries and the burden of the trainer/team making the tough decision. You need a physician who will monitor and evaluate in between rounds and if need too will perform quick testing that should take no more than 30 seconds to perform (pupil, eye muscles, and peripheral check). These tests are routinely done in Ophthalmology (and Neurology) setting to test brain to eye function. I don't know what type of doctor is in the corner evaluating fighters, but it needs to be a SPECIALIST not a primary care physician who may not be well rounded in evaluating fighters who need immediate care..... Someone like a Neurologist-who is the best option; but an Ophthalmologist or ER doctor can do too, both are FULLY capable in recognizing early signs of neurological impairment.

Just rampant ignorance and ******ity. Here are a couple examples:

"An absolute brutal Neanderthal sport. Even football and hockey players wear headgear."

"People love the barbaric violence. They act like, "oh my!" when someone is beaten to death. Humans haven't evolved since Rome. Just the same primitive bloodlust."

"And here I thought whites were supposed to be superior"

"White men can’t box! He tried and died"

"Boxing the sort of sport brain dead people watch."

"What else do you expect to happen? He got what he deserved in my opinion. Oh, he expected money and fame....my bad."

Good grief. Online comment sections of articles are usually cesspools of ignorance it seems.

less rounds is not the answer.

Less rounds is a slippery slope. 15 rounds was not the problem and it already killed a lot of the spirit of a champion fighter and a championship fight.

Most of the injuries statistically come in the lower weight divisions because of accumulation of punishment. Not sure there is much we can do. Fights today are generally less intense than they once were so the one thing we could ask is why did the old timers manage? Sure there were deaths in the ring...but they also fought a lot more rounds, with smaller gloves, and yet, people managed.

The one constant, the thing that changed is the level of conditioning that was normative for fighters. Being in very good condition in boxing, is a pretty good insurance policy. Maybe we could have more rigid guidelines in the lower weight classes (where most of these incidents occur) when it comes to the fighters being prepared as professionals.

There will always be those who have a defect somewhere and it is sad. It is a lottery really. We could all buy tickets to the fight at the sands and decide to have a site convey where we all drive together at 20 miles an hour on the freeway. That way nobody could get hurt on the road right? Most of us would take our chances and go 70 because we take that risk. Unfortunately in the lower divisions of boxing we are faced with the same scenario. Some people will die as a result of our society sanctioning boxing.
