Canelo did fight GGG, twice! He actually beat him pretty clearly the last time. I did not hear Saunders say anything regarding not fighting GGG. I have actually heard him say the opposite on many occasions. So how do you go about choosing between what you say he claims one day and what he says another. Oh,my guess is you choose the one that validates your fandom of GGG.Like I said, I'm not trying to give him extra wins.
We all saw Canelo throw the belt, we all saw Sturm flat out refuse to fight and Saunders said out if his own mouth that he wasn't ready for Golovkin.
There's no great mystery here, no "he said, she said". It all happened in front of our eyes.
You like noting when fighters supposedly refuses to fight GGG, but you conveniently leave out when GGG refuses to fight other top fighters. He refused to move up and fight Ward. I recall Lara constantly calling him out and he refused to fight Lara. He gave up his IBF title because he refused to fight Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Just this year alone he has refused to fight Charlo and Andrade. The "whole story"is the only fighter GGG is willing to risk fighting is Canelo and when he loses again he will yet again scream for another fight with Canelo.
At least when Marquez was chasing Manny he had the honor and integrity to continue to fight very good competition. No excuses, no mental gymnastics he fought top boxers and continued to add to his legacy.Last edited by jdp28tx; 07-02-2019, 06:25 AM.Comment

I'm actually a fan of both guys, having followed Saunders since his pro debut. Just trying to call it down the middle.I did not hear Saunders say anything regarding not fighting GGG. When Golovkin was knocking people over left and right, I distinctly heard the man say he wasn't ready.
Following the Lemieux fight, he called out the whole world when we all know that Golovkin was focused on Canelo.
If I've missed something out please let me know and I'll gladly stand corrected.Comment

Yeah, you left out the whole story regarding GGG's refusal to fight many fighters. Do you see how ridiculous it gets when GGG fans start to bring out (in order to justify his thin resume) rumors of this fighter said yes he will fight him or this fighter says no. Well guess what boxers talk and that has been going on for generations and all of a sudden this generation of fans start using such talk as excuses and justifications for GGG' thin resume. Well, it works both ways as you conveniently left out GGG's refusals to fight top fighters too.I'm actually a fan of both guys, having followed Saunders since his pro debut. Marquez did not need fans putting up excuses for him. He did not need fans screaming oh this guy refuses to fight Marquez or whatever. You know what he did. He fought on and he fought the best opponents he could find. He did this in order to enhance his legacy and make a case as to why he deserved a rematch with Paq and his fights against top guys brought more demands for a rematch with Paq. And Marquez was no spring chicken either so he did not use his age as an excuse (which is what GGG and his fans like to do).
GGG has not taken the Marquez route. Instead he has decided to whine and get his fans and the press to whine for him. He has decided to fight no-hopers instead of top conteders. That is the road he has decided to take and that is why no one really cares to see a 3rd match other than GGG fans and some members of the press.Last edited by jdp28tx; 07-02-2019, 06:43 AM.Comment

I said earlier on that GGG is not perfect or entirely blameless. I just don't think he's the devil incarnate either.Yeah, you left out the whole story regarding GGG's refusal to fight many fighters. Lara called for GGG but did not move up to 160 unlike Jermall Charlo. I can see why people might feel he got swerved with his skill, elusiveness and relative lack of box office value. I can also see where spells of inactivity might cost him in that fight, as well as his natural disadvantage in size and strength. But hey, if you see it as GGG ducking Lara, I can accept your point of view even if I don't necessarily agree.
Ward falls into the "he said, he she said" bracket you described earlier, arguments on both sides regarding splits, tune ups and catchweights so I left it alone.
Boxing 1013 gave a good breakdown on that subject but I'll only be accused of bias if I relay it here.Comment

i agree.
but not with this., it should be clear to you by now that GGG didnt fight tough fights to avoid defeats, because his legacy was built on being undefeated so he could be compared to greats.
There is no shame in this, lots do it, and GGG definitely had a respectable 2015-2018 IBF reign before he vacated his belt. A 3 year champ with one top contender win and draw with an elite from a lower division is good going (hopkins similarly faced 3 but easily beat all of them).

fought canelo 2x in his prime? had been trying to get the fight for 2 years pior to that? ducked by the lineal middleweight champion of hte world, sergio martinez, so blatantly that lou dibella came out and said it?
"Who would give a flying ****, and why are you even asking? Who knows Gennady Golovkin other than you, me and a few other people? How many people would he bring to the table? How much money would he generate? ... He is a very good fighter, but it's a fight that economically makes no sense."
-lou on a different date
"Sergio will be out for at least a year. You saw his last fight, he won it on guts and will and balls alone. He had no knee, he had no hand, and I'm not sending a champion who is 38-years-old - after a year plus layoff - into a ring with this guy. I'm not saying they will never fight. I'm not speaking for Sergio, who is a grown as man and controls his own career. The successor to Sergio Martiknez has already been determined and the next great middleweight is Triple G."
-guess who said this

That's why he'll never be among the greats. He never beat anyone.
He couldn't even make a statement against canelo.
After the first fight with canelo he should have rose to the occassion in the second fight. Instead he got outfought by the smaller guy.Comment
