A Franchise Champion shall enjoy special status with respect to his or her mandatory obligations, holding multiple titles and competing for titles of other organizations, as the WBC Board of Governors rules on a case-by-case basis.

The Franchise Champion designation is awarded exclusively by the World Boxing Council and considers the following mutual agreements between the WBC, the champion and his promoter

1. The Franchise Champion designation is exclusively by appointment of the WBC Board of Governors by a majority vote of the board.

2. This designation is not transferable and is exclusively to the fighter who receives such designation.

3. The Franchise Champion will be designated as WBC Emeritus Champion once he retires from boxing.

4. The Franchise Champion will proudly represent the WBC in every single fight as a reigning WBC champion, regardless of any specific conditions or titles being associated with all future fights. WBC rules and regulations will govern under the traditional conditions of boxing in the Franchise champion fights. WBC will approve through the franchise champion promoter every opponent scheduled to fight.

5. Franchise Champion agrees to participate in a minimum of two social responsibility events every year, organized and in conjunction with the WBC.

6. The WBC may recognize a WBC champion in the division or divisions where the Franchise champion currently competes.

7. The WBC may award a Diamond Championship belt in those fights in which the Franchise Champion engages. If the Franchise Champion loses, the winner will receive the Diamond belt and may be considered as mandatory contender of the division.

This **** makes absolutely ZERO sense. This is worse than anything the WBA has ever done with their champions.

No. It's nothing like the WBA super champ. This tag is a do whatever you want designation. The WBA super champ still has mandatories every 18 months. The franchise champ doesn't have mandatories. The WBA super champ can only defend that title in his weight class. The franchise champ can defend that title in any division. If you defeat the super champ you become super champ (I think?). If you defeat the franchise champ you become a contender for the WBC champ in that division with consideration to become the mandatory. So if Kovalev beats Canelo at 175 he becomes the WBC diamond belt champ with consideration to become mandatory for Gvozdyk.

Man I remember everyone was pissed off with two champions per division in 70s early 80s and flipped when IBF came along now it’s insane.

They've denied them from having the first undisputed MW champion since Jermaine Taylor. A historic event for their app. Having the undisputed champion in one of the most historic divisions (probably second only to HW) is a big deal. Especially if the fighter is Canelo.

GGG is the favorite and will probably win. At that point what’s the limbo state for Canelo? Canelo beat GGG and is still Lineal. Does the Franchise Champion need to prove it again to get a the now “Regular” Champ belt?

GGG can also fight Andrade since Andrade wants it. Assume GGG beats both Charlo and Andrade before end of 2020, will GGG still want Canelo and the other straps?

History won’t beg for it so much since Canelo GGG already fought though a Unification for Undisputed to finalize the Trilogy is also good.

Canelo can still be promoted as Undisputed. Industry won’t default on Canelo needing to fight Charlo. The WBC had already mandated GGG vs Charlo. Sanchez is out of the picture

And you give the casual fan WAY too much credit. 95% of them wouldnt know a franchise belt from a timing belt. And there is nothing to stop DAZN from calling a fight "undisputed". Its not like there is actually some legitimate boxing writers who would call them on it.....
