It's clear apps are going to be the future. As for how it helps boxing I can see it working for the sport as long as DAZN and ESPN don't get NFL package like DirectTV currently has, or NBA or MLB.

If they get the a major US sport they will have to dedicate programming time to support that product. That means there will be less boxing on and less support programming.

I also think it will be inevitable that offer fights on a per fight basis, in partnership with a cable company since boxing fans tend to buy fights day of the event.

Lets quit starting history where it makes the most sense for the narrative we are going for with all this anti-DAZN/ESPN+ sh^t.

HBO Boxing debuted in 1973 & mighta had 100k subs for their whole damn service back then & they were for sure only on 9hrs a day. And they showed the Foreman vs Frazier HW title fight live to numbers that woulda embarrassed DAZN & ESPN+ today. Bet the head of HBO Sports back then, if there even was one, woulda ****** Bundini Brown's **** during the national anthem to get Canelo vs Jacobs DAZN numbers that night.

This streaming service world we are entering is EXACTLY like the premium cable era we are still in. Its the same damn business model ffs. Its just via apps & smart TV's instead of cable TV. We've been paying a monthly subscriptions. We will continue paying a monthly subscription (or yearly if you're smart).

Or basically some of you guys are the same guys who woulda been saying HBO & HBO Boxing specifically was a sh^t idea back in the 70's when when they were first coming into being. And now fast forward a few decades & HBO Boxing has one of the highlight reels of the sport for boxing fans & HBO is a major player in the TV entertainment world & are no only on 24/7/365 they also got numerous HB0 sister channels.

Idk that that necessarily has to be true, but you could be right. If DAZN wants to be the king of sports I think you do it by running as much sh^t as you can. The good part with these apps is there isn't a hard schedule.

You can overlap your schedule like crazy & its basically like having a bunch of DAZN channels that you can flip through. So idk that DAZN is winning the big game if they just start dropping sports when they acquire a bigger sport. If DAZN is going to succeed they are gonna wanna keep what they already got + grow into new sports. I mean at least for the foreseeable future.

Could be wrong here, but I think thats the smart way to go. Dropping content isn't going to be +EV for them anytime soon as long as its something that draws customers & say what you will about boxing, but it draws customers.

I also think it will be inevitable that offer fights on a per fight basis, in partnership with a cable company since boxing fans tend to buy fights day of the event.
Idk. If they don't figure out churn after big fights they might have to. So I think they could do a PPV or PPV-like move not unlike HBO did after awhile into their run, despite what they've said previously, but I think thats just Canelo fights & other big big fights that'd be a PPV or PPV-like thing.

The difference is where boxing was as a mainstream sport when HBO picked it up and the fact that boxing was not the primary reason HBO was purchased.

HBO got in on the ground floor and helped grow the sport. The apps are getting in as the sport seems to be regressing. By not engaging with the other major players in the sport they are not helping the sport grow.

Going back to the 80's boxing came on after the movie of the week, which was a big deal because these were major hollywood movies premiering on TV. Boxing picked up some of that traffic.

Does DAZN or ESPN+ have programming that brings viewers in and keeps them? ESPN might with some college sports but what exactly does DAZN have?

Look no further than ESPN.. As they took on NFL, NBA and MLB, they had to dedicate programming to each sport (likely that was part of the deal when they acquired the rights). For a long time the sports they used to show all but disappeared, like boxing. It became just a Friday night thing. I can't see how the same thing doesn't happen with DAZN.

They have to do some kind of pay per fight because boxing fans are not going to be the ones supporting the app, especially if they add major sports and thus do less boxing.

Also its the nature of the sport that as buzz builds most purchases are made day of the fight. DAZN can't keep expecting people to take the time to sign up for a monthly or yearly service just to watch a fight given they have no interest in the smaller cards.

And they were doing worse then DAZN is doing now? And they had more to offer huh? I guess they shoulda went outta business like a lot of cats are suggesting DAZN is going to have to do then.

HBO got in on the ground floor and helped grow the sport.
Make up your mind. You just HBO picked up HBO when "boxing was a mainsteam sport" now you're saying they grew they sport, but most people would argue, myself among them, that HBO made boxing more of a niche sport & helped shrink the sport.

The apps are getting in as the sport seems to be regressing. By not engaging with the other major players in the sport they are not helping the sport grow.
Whats with all this "growing the sport" sh^t anyway?

Networks buy things they think people will watch. Thats why they buy content. Obviously they want more & more people to watch something, but they aren't in it for the sport to grow. They are in it for the money the people who'll come to watch the sport bring.

Does DAZN or ESPN+ have programming that brings viewers in and keeps them? ESPN might with some college sports but what exactly does DAZN have?
Boxing is a sport with a loyal audience. MMA too. Both are dabbling pretty strongly in boxing & MMA.

And its getting so old to say this, but DAZN is still less than a year in the game in the US. They won the rights to Japanese baseball awhile back & grew nicely in Japan off of that. If they acquire a major US sport they'll grow here too. We are still early in the game. ESPN was trash in the beginning to what its become now. HBO was trash & only was on the air for 9 hours a day & look what they've become. This sh^t takes time. You can't invent a finish line every day & say "well looks like DAZN is still losing". This sh^t takes years.

And not enough people are educated on the apps. Prelims on ESPN then switch to the app for the main card. This is a professional boxer who doesn't know where the fight is being broadcast.

Sure streaming is the future in some capacity. But until they but a major sport exclusively on an app I'm not convinced yet. I'm the boxing guy in my circle of friends. When they call or text me asking what channel the fight is on & I explain to them the apps they don't think the hassle is worth it unless it's a big fight like Canelo. If y'all think anybody but us are watching these fights on these apps y'all are clueless.

Aren’t Mexicans the back bone of hard American labor? I’m sure they’ll be front runners using DAZN easier than anybody else since DAZN’s Hispanic market is growing fast
