I agree. It backfired. Had it been the only time AJ was knocked down in the fight, then typically the referee would have call a halt to the action, to get the gum shield rinsed off and have it put back into the fighter's mouth, while giving him a warning in the process.
However, this time it was different. Joshua had already been knocked down three previous times before he deliberately spit out his mouthpiece on the canvas; Which indicated that he was done and was ready to check out of the fight.
He subsequently, went to his corner and looked over his shoulder for assistance from his team. Then proceeded to rest his gloves on the top of the ropes as the referee shouted commands at him with having no gum shield in his mouth.
Therefore, judging by his body language; AJ was a tired, hurt, defeated and broken fighter. Who was looking for a way out and found it by tapping out. So he basically quit.
