It sucks to not have a big name PR fighter. This generation in general nowadays makes a bit of money, flex on social media, think theyre stars & then slack off (ie. Verdejo). The stars from days past had the charisma & the work ethic to earn their respect as stars by fighting the best guys in their way. Now they think if theyre a star on social media theyre stars in boxing. PR has some good contenders & champs but dont have that star representative for the island for primetime this generation.

There seems to be a lack of world class trainers from Puerto Rico at the moment. Could be part of the problem.

Juanma Lopez was on his way, Felix Verdejo was on his way. But what I think is that once they start making some good money they get comfortable and lose that fire/hunger.

I agree for Verdejo but I think Juanma just fought ******ly by brawling instead of boxing which hastened his decline. He was never the same after Salido.

I guess they got Pedraza and Danny Garcia.

As a Puerto Rican myself I have to say no. Pedraza is no where near superstar level he's an alright fighter not a warrior.

Danny is the closest but he doesn't rep PR he's all about philly. He doesn't even sport the flag so he doesn't get the love you'd expect from the mother land

For me that is what has kept Mexico above my beloved Puerto Rico in their boxing rivalry. Not only does Mexico produce awesome fighters but many of the best trainers are Mexican as well

I can't believe how popular that guy is. I just don't understand how people do not find his rap style and voice annoying. I respect that he made it huge in the world but it really baffles me how many people like his music. I miss the days of hearing salsa blasting out of the cars instead of annoying ass dembo and this newer reggaeton sound. Rant over.

Wilfred Benitez and Carlos Ortiz were much better fighter than Trinidad and Cotto imo.

I agree with many of the comments on here as to why there's a drought of PR boxing superstars, especially the loss of hunger for the sport once they get a taste for the money. I also think, and this may have to do with the comments about the trainers, that they lack the defense, footwork and ellusive moves. They take too much punishment and coupled with a lack of hunger, they give up during the fight.
Maybe Cotto and Trinidad should look to help with the training aspect? Doubt Cotto will though since he's got a lot going on with his promotional company...
I am optimistic, however, and I know there will be more superstars out of our beloved island but until then, I will still enjoy watching other boxers from other countries, including the country we rival the most. They have some pretty good talent right now and they seem to be evolving to where they're not offense only/defend with the head anymore...
Even so, I will still wave my beautiful flag at every fight I go to since most cards seem to have at least one Puerto Rican fighting, albeit they're not always on the televised portion of the card. #WARPUERTORICO #COTTOTRINIDAD #WENEEDOURNEXTSUPERSTARASAP

Hey, let's not forget Macho Camacho. The Mancho Man was not only flashy, but he was athletic and a great boxer. Camacho also had a great chin and fought the best of his generation. I loved seeing him fight and hoping he would get knocked out. That never happened, even though he fought Trinidad, De La Hoya, and Julio Cesar Chavez to name a few. He was one of kind. RIP Macho.
