Comments Thread For: Trinidad, Cotto React To Lack of Superstars in Puerto Rico

For the last few years, there has been a lack of boxing superstars in Puerto Rico. Felix 'Tito' Trinidad was a mega-star with world titles at welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight. After Trinidad retired in 2008, the superstar mantle was passed to Miguel Cotto, who captured world titles at 140, 147, 154 and 160 pounds.

I actually miss puerto Rican fighters. Boxing right now feels like its missing a few pieces and PR boxing is one of them

I'm sure they got some on the come up, PR is like Mex they ALWAYS have somebody to represent.

Of course finding a Trinidad/Cotto caliber fighter is a very tough task but PR will always produce solids

There was nothing like seeing Tito enter a ring. He had a plan A and if that didn’t work then he would resort to plan A. I miss seeing him climb the buckles after a knockdown.

Nah they don’t count on the island. He didn’t rep the island coming up, doesn’t speak the language, etc. All the ricans I know look at him differently.

Juanma Lopez was on his way, Felix Verdejo was on his way. But what I think is that once they start making some good money they get comfortable and lose that fire/hunger.

At the moment right now P.R. boxing or boxers of P.R. descent look like Danny Garcia at 147

Young prospects Subriel Matias and Danielito Zorrilla at 140

Young prospect Joseph Adorno at 130

WBO Champion Angel Acosta at 108

Other prospects Janelson Figueroa at 147 and Edgar Berlanga at 160

And really young kids to look out for in the future Xandar Zayas who just signed with Top Rank and the young amateur kid from the island Lionel Colon.

Puerto Rican boxing has been in a long drought. I'm hoping to see someone emerge eventually, hopefully relatively soon.

They get the star treatment as soon as they start making noise. Hype, flattery, and greed make it hard to stay focused.
