Kovalev took harder fights, more risk?

He didn't move up so that automatically means he didn't take any risks.

I always felt they were similar in level of opposition...but somehow ggg was a bum who fought nobody and kovalev was the boogie man.

I remember reading time and time again that Kovalev was a stiff Russian fighter who had only fought a shot Pascal and an old Hopkins, who Ward was going to expose easily. It wasn't until he was better than they thought or Ward wasn't as good at 175 than he was at 168, that they changed their tune.

No. GGG fought the best guys who were willing to fight him. He never turned down Ward. Ward challenged him when he was in training for a contracted fight with Lemieux and could not legally fight anyone else. By the time he KOed Lemieux Ward was fighting at 175 with no intention of returning to 168. Ducking Ward is a myth started by Ward lovers and GGG haters. Kovalev fought at 175 his entire career just as GGG fought at 160. GGG fought Jacobs and Canelo and Kovalev never fought anyone better or even as good pfp as those two. Kovalev has been stopped twice and knocked down several times. GGG has only one very debatable loss and has never been knocked down. Kovalev and GGG are both fearless fighters but GGG is a much better fighter with a much better record.

There’s truth to that...also there were the transparent attempts by some ward fans to make kovalev seem like a monster before the ward fight too. But there does seem to be a trend of ward opponents being rated highly once they’re on his resume...same happened with froch, who was routinely called a caveman and a bum.
