Yeah, and that version of Clay/Ali was far from his zenith. This was a guy who'd been dropped by Cooper. And a guy who made countless amateur errors which Liston simply couldn't punish him for.
Liston was "older", but he certainly didn't have a lot of mileage on his odometer. He simply didn't have the footwork becoming of a champion.
Fyry has remarkable footwork for a man his size.
"Too Fast" Fury vs "Sonny" Liston: Who wins?

When we're talking about Liston we should be talking about fighters HIS size before ever discussing anyone who dwarfs him.
Anyone who's seen Tunney and Liston knows it's Gene's fight. Quite comfortably, actually.
Liston plays right into Tunney's wheelhouse. Much lesser men than Tunney caused Liston problems with a half-assed approach to the style Tunney mastered. His footwork, footspeed, control of distance and feints are just too much for Liston.
Liston has the size advantage, obviously. And if you're looking for a textbook-perfect Boxer, you'll be hard pressed to find one better than Liston. He checks off all the boxes. And he does few things wrong from a technical perspective. He also is the more experienced fighter at THIS weight. Those "advantages" are all inconsequential for the purposes of this fight.
He also hits harder, but the disparity in power probably isn't that great. Liston's whole game, and thus his career, lived and died by his one-punch power. When it worked it was monstrous. When it didn't come though for him, he failed miserably. Gene, conversely, started out as a puncher, but developed layers to his game. Dempsey said Gene hit harder than anyone he'd faced. Tunney's sparring partners said his power was improving just as he called it a wrap on his career. He's probably the closest analog we have to a prime Benny Leonard on film.
Gene is far tougher, far smarter, far quicker, far better conditioned and far craftier. He had the heart of a warrior, while Liston was a punk.
So yeah, maybe Gene flies too close to the sun and is caught with a punch which he never recovers from. But the best Tunney is matador to Liston's bull.
If Liston can't swim in the kiddy pool, why after you gonna throw him into deep waters with a great like Fury?Leave a comment:

I enjoy watching how threads like this can jump fighters and conversations so much.Leave a comment:

Liston could not deal with Ali, he ain't going to deal with Fury.
The jab, the movement, and Fury ability to slip and keep out of range will keep Liston frustrated and swinging at thin air.Leave a comment:

I think Liston wins more rounds than Wlad but I agree.Leave a comment:

Troll on here. I’m sure you’ll find someone to bite. That's the best you can do, Trick?
What's wrong with Tunney, Loughran, Walker, Dempsey, Gibbons?
In which fight did Robinson look better than any of them?
We have footage of all of them. Dempsey refused to fight Greb. The rest were handedly defeated.
If you've seen a Gazelle run, do you need to see a cheetah with a Gazelle in its mouth run to know it's fast?Leave a comment:

That's the best you can do, Trick?Rusty Trollboner is a moron. For example he rates fighters on eye test. In that category he ranks Harry Greb very high. Now there’s absolutely nothing wrong in having Greb high on your atg list as he probably has the best resume among all fighters in history. The problem is that there’s no footage of Greb!
Shows you how ******ed Rusty is.
