Will Golovkin retire as an all time great?

Almost isn't all.
I have no set in stone criteria for ATG but I've always said that an ATG to me is a fighter that can be great in any era, and ODLH personifies a perfect fighter to me when focused and prime. His losses / downfalls were related to issues outside of the ring, not shortcomings or flaws as a fighter.Comment

Big fan but no, not an all-time-great. I get that you can only face who will face you and guys avoided a prime GGG like crazy, but he just hasn't defeated enough top level guys to prove he is all-time-great. Had he fought and beat Ward, Martinez, then Canelo and maybe another top tier younger fighter I'd say it would be hard to deny him. But as it is he's a first ballot hall of famer for sure.Last edited by Motofan; 09-06-2018, 02:58 PM.Comment

What if he unifies all the belts (the big four plus the Ring and IBO) and the lineal title at middleweight?
Takes out Canelo, then Saunders/Andrade winner, then Jacobs/Derevyanchenko winner?
Would you consider him an all time great then?Comment

I don't think so. ATG is a very high standard. His resume would pale in comparison to Floyd or Manny, who are considered ATG's.Comment

Easily fits in. Marvin didnt get his shot til his 50th or so fight. Hopkins resume at 160 might be worse than Golovkins.hell no!
the guy spent a good deal of his prime in the amateurs and in europe in obscurity. when he first got to the US nobody would fight him, and you can't rate a guy entirely based on who he was ducked by, it just gets too subjective.
yes, he was a very good middleweight with a good run. ATG? no f#cking way! marvin hagler, carlos monzon, bernard hopkins, harry greb, sugar ray robinson. does gennady golovkin fit in with those guys

Hagler would be crucified on this forum if he was an active fighter today.
Pretty much every big win he had were against men that started at much smaller weights than him. Actually he'd have probably been labeled a bum for them earlier draws and losses...
Today, that's enough to get called a hypejob, bum, weight bully or whatever else.Comment

Exactly. Even Hopkins best wins at 160 were against smaller guys. Thats why its laughable to see both Hs praised for their work at 160 and Golovkin ripped apart. Hagler and Golovkin are very similar in how their careers played out.Hagler would be crucified on this forum if he was an active fighter today.
