The catchweight was a throwaway offer to save face. Since there is no precedent historically it indicates that it probably wouldn’t have happened, champions don’t move down in weight for a challenger. You speak of obtuse arguments, your point about the catchweight was superfluous, and stating that most people don’t know about boxing while not being able to read between the lines is ironic.

It was with every intention that they planned to wait out GGG to show signs or slipping. Even cotto and BJS were honest enough to say they wanted no parts of Golovkin at that point in time.

It’s telling that most die hard canelo advocates are nationalists. That’s fine, I’m proud of my heritage too. But to compromise your integrity by being disengenous and promoting an agenda means there is little respect for the sport. The difference between canelo demanding his catchweight at 155 and cotto fighting Martinez at 159 is that cotto started out at 140 at 21 whereas canelo at 21 snagged his 154 wbc belt against Hatton... Cotto who was naturally much smaller went up in weight. Canelo wanted the 155 catchweight with the pretense that he was still too small to fight at 160, when he frequently rehydrated to middleweight at the very least. Cotto was 155 when he fought Martinez meaning he couldn’t even make 159 if he wanted to. Since Canelo held the lineal belt, it’s reasonable he would defend at 160 since he could easily make weight. Especially considering he fought Chávez at 164.5 before fighting at 160....

Apologize for my mistake, you’re right about canelo vs Mayweather. Guess Mayweather is just the exception, Golovkin was willing to move down to 154 for the bout, too lucrative to turn down.
