The author is simply stating that right now is the most Golovkin will ever be appreciated in his career by most casual fans, and he's right. Just like he says, a win over Canelo would just prove what the vast majority thought. "but in the general public’s eyes the best case scenario is a confirmation of what they already thought: GGG is better than Canelo."
As for the new blood in the division, real boxing fans know that they're dangerous, however none of them have a resume and are all 100% unproven. If he beats Charlo, Derevyanchenko and Murata by 1st round KOs, nobody will remember who these guys were in 3 years.
"Wins over the remaining crop of contenders—Jermall Charlo, Billy Joe Saunders and Sergiy Derevyanchenko—would be incredibly impressive to the readers of this website, but probably not to the general public"
Overall Erdman is 100% correct in his assessment of the casual fan. However most people here are not casual fans and do not give a **** what they think. I want to see these fights. Whether or not most fools will forget them in 3 years or not means nothing to me.

He's been a champion for a very long time, has made a ton of defenses and has done so in an exciting and dominant style whilst being one of the most popular entertainers in the sport. All of that will add up.

though I am sure he will get more.

He has also got a tied record for most consecutive KO's in title fights too at 17. Tied with Wilfredo Gomez.
Those things will add up.

Lebron and Golovkin are both finished articles almost, neither have anything left to prove they've already done it all and the sooner these bitter ass salty haters deal with it the better, Golovkin and Lebron careers are already are that of legends.

Canelo and Jacobs are good wins but he needs a bit more because the drop off after those two is big and those two while good fighters are not special fighters either.
Perhaps an emphatic win like a KO in a Canelo re-match would solidify him as a generational great. To be considered an historically great fighter if he can get out of the division without losing and defeats Saunders to complete the set and maybe knock off a guy like Devreychenko, Andrade or Charlo then I'd say he's a truly great fighter and arguably a top 10 middleweight in history.
160 is historically great. I'm not even sure if Hopkins would rank in it's top 10. Monzon and Hagler IMO are both clearly top 5 but Hopkins' reign without Tito was a lot of crap.
