Never said they were bums, i said weak opposition considering their own levels.

Hagler in his prime fought Wilford Scypion, not exactly a top opponent. Mustafa Hamsho too, who had only beaten a load of actual bums. These weren't world class opposition

My point is that people act like all these old fighters fought top opposition all the time, going through murderers row. They didn't. Plenty of the ATG's fought soft touches in their primes too.

When you were as active as Ali you can afford to fight the likes of Wepner in between more formidable opponents, and we're all richer for the experience. He was generous that way.

leon at his best was a very good fighter....about as good as michael...
i think he got that first taste of fame and fortune after beating ali and that was all she wrote...i guess nobody remembers him for being a cokehead that was crashing up brand new whips and sh**t, but i forgot nobody here can remember a fighter prior to floyd mayweather

so what's wrong with GGG going for a easy tune-up until he fights Canelo in Sept?

ali had been through some of the most brutal fights ever at that stage. he had a hall of fame level career in the 60's prior to the suspension of his license. then he was laid off for several years. then he came back and, having older legs and much better competition, often had to go to war to win.

i don't expect golovkin to find a top shelf opponent with a huge payday lined up, and you can't blame golokvin for a poor opponent when his opponent pulls out just weeks before a fight, but don't compare the two.

spinks was also a gold medalist in montreal and came from a boxing family. he wasn't anybody to write home about, but he was not spike osullivan either.

Gold medalist and undefeated Leon was still a bit of an inexperienced unknown...a lot like Munguia really.

well, not the gold medalist part...

                  National (USA) Champion 1974, 75, & 76!

To refer to Spinks as a bum in his first bout with Ali shows the OP knows NOTHING about boxing and boxing terminology.

Just another forum rube begging for attention.

                  Ray
geale has a better resume than Leon.

                  This is the pros

Show some respect. Neon Leon had the fastest rise of any heavyweight in history Goldmedal for the US and beat Muhammed Ali in only is 8th pro fight to become the heavyweight champion of the world .Leon comes from the greatest boxing family in history the Spinks from St. Louis
