Should one for instance allow fighters to snort Kalle levels of ******* before they fight because it has not yet been proven that it provides a performance advantage?

And, yeah, rules. They may not always be right or fair (in fact very often in this sport they seem neither), but nonetheless, there they are. You are always free to ply your trade in disused parking lots or try a refreshing change of career - boxing glove tester maybe? The only really distasteful thing about the rules is when they appear to be applied entirely according to the relative worth of the fighter(s) involved.
