basically every championship boxer has said so..
Is boxing more psychological then physical?

I know it’s popular to say that Boxing is 70% mental but it’s really not.
It takes equal amounts of all those elements to make a succesful boxer.
Some fighters are all heart with minimal skills and few of those guys end up dieing after taking beatings.
It takes a good mix of everything. It’s bullsht that Boxing is mostly mental.Comment

I found it interesting Chris Eubank Jr described Avni Yildrim's style as irresponsible.
It's not just about will and resolve. It is a skill sport really determined by fine margins.Comment

If a couple of guys are close in level, then yeah, the more advanced mentally/psychologically fighter-boxer of the two will win.
But for a guy who's physically dominant over an opponent, the physically inferior opponent will still lose 9 times out of 10.
I mean this is world level boxing we're talking about. We're not talking about a street fight. If a guy is above you athletically and physically at this level...that's an extraordinary mountain to climb, even if you own the mental edge.Comment

Rocky is full of chit. Never say die and the will to win, eh I wouldn't go that route --- way too cliche. Every fighter thinks like that as a baseline.
The mental aspect is more about how you process the other fighters moves, how you visualize strategy, which punches happens at which time. Time moves differently for Boxers. You train to think fast so you eventually slow down time. It's very esoteric and I'm sure a subjective experience with most fighters.
You learn the punches, techniques, and strategies but how you apply that to your victim is the mental aspect.
Me personally, it's about my bag of tricks. The bag of tricks is everything you've picked up and worked on along the way. It's very much like those old Kung-Fu movies. If you got tricks the other guy hasn't seen yet, you have the advantage. That's why it's super important to have a really good trainer. The old masters had tricks for days.Last edited by McNulty; 02-07-2018, 11:53 PM.Comment

Yeah I have seen this in many fights boxers getting by using heart but eventually succumbing to heavy punches prime example mosley vs margheritoA good attitude with the will to win and never give up is very helpful. It can't work miracles though. The other boxer wants to win too. If he is enough better than the Rocky type guy he will win the fight in real life. If anybody gets hit hard enough and often enough in the right place they are going to be knocked out no matter how strong their will to win may be.Comment

Fantastic response thank you for that. I can relate I feel in general we a society are alot more pampered then our ancestors we don't have that bit between the teeth we're all too reliant on the system of consumerism. Great input thoughIt's mostly psychological
The mindset is what makes you train hard, and 'live the life', and dedicate yourself to your craft. So, I'm talking about psychological factors as they play out way before fights even gets made. Being mentally tough 'on the night' is not gonna cut it
The outcomes of most fights are decided OUTSIDE the ring, with fighters continuously testing their soul and harnessing the desire to win. What makes for great fights is when you have 2 truly dedicated and gritty fighters willing to do whatever it takes. Doesn't happen a lot, unfortunately. We live in a world fascinated by comfortLast edited by PsychoPat; 02-08-2018, 06:11 AM.Comment

The difference between being a Champion is mental not physical.
Anyone can take care of the physical side, the mental side you either have it...or not.Comment
