I don't know about "dive". I just see a bizarre beating, not a boxing match. It was more like WWE. How many times do you see a boxer grab the ropes, curl up and allegedly "scream like a woman in a horror movie" while his opponent is teeing off?
Like I said a lot of fights from those days look "off". Like their reactions aren't natural looking. And when some say a large percentage of fights were fixed I tend to believe it. A lot of old timers would never accept it but my eyes can't fool my brain when I see something like this.
Well he wasnt the first fighter to look shellshocked early against a big puncher, and he wont be the last.
Could be he wasnt prepared for the improvements Louis had made in the years after their first fight, could be he was just caught, hurt and couldnt recover, could be that he wasnt training with the same vigour as he had before.
All much more likely than conspiracy theories about dives or wanting to lose because he was being considered a **** (or whatever OP was saying i cant remember now).
It is a fact Shmelling admitted he did NOT want to win the fight bc how Hitler celebrated his first win as ****s victory.
Shmelling was reported to not even be warming up in the locker room .
Did he throw the fight despite being physically hurt going by his OWN statements? Well yea . lol
Shmelling was on his way down anyway , fighters were not young in those days in their 30's . Judging the fight itself isnt exactly a strong case he was trying to win.
Shmelling did not know how he was percieved until he came to N.Y ,he literally had mobs of people after him even boycott his hotel labeling him a ****. Im pretty sure this changed his mind before the fight night.
Shmelling only threw TWO punches ! This has not wanting to win written all over it.
This. Imagine his frame of mind when he was hit with this chit by *******s when he got to NY and all the pressure on him. He took a dive to not deal with it all.
